The Morgan State University Lady Bears (3-23, 3-14 MEAC) had a tough shooting night on their way to a 78-62 defeat at the hands of the Lady Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
The game was played at Hill Field House on the Morgan State University campus. The defeat gives the Hawks a clean sweep of the two game regular season series against MSU.
MD-Eastern Shore won the battle of the boards, and held the Lady Bears to 32% shooting from the field. The Hawks advantage on the glass helped them take control of the game in the 1st half.
The Hawks went on a 15-2 run to break open the contest and assume command. MSU got off to a slow start and couldn't get the offensive engine started.
The Lady Bears fell behind by a 43-25 count at intermission.
MSU fell behind by 22 in the 2nd half before an 18-6 spurt brought them to within striking distance. However, the Lady Bears could not sustain the run and ultimately fell to their 14th conference defeat.
Morgan was led by Sharonda Watson who had 18 points for the night. Freshman Whitney Johnson had 16 points and 3 assists. Javone Davis enjoyed a 14 point night for MSU.
The Hawks were led by Octavia Thompson and Laconia Hatcher with 18 points apiece. Erica Bennett had a 17 point evening.
The Lady Bears return to action Friday, March 5, 2004 to take on Coppin State in the regular season final.
