Tia Henry tied for the team lead with 10 points vs. Hampton on Monday night.
Box Score
The Morgan State University Lady Bears (1-18, 1-9 MEAC) never got the offensive engine started, and fell at home Monday evening to the Hampton University Lady Pirates by a final count of 65-47.
The Lady Bears suffered through another difficult shooting night. MSU shot only 28% from the field for the game, and hit only 3 of 15 (3) pointers. The turnover count continues to mount as MSU turned the ball over 28 times.
Morgan State played a competitive first half, playing good enough defensively to hold the Lady Pirates to only 9 of 35 shooting in the first half. MSU matched HU bucket for bucket for the entire half, and the Lady Bears went into the locker room down only 24-22.
However, the Lady Bears came out sluggish in the second half. MSU was held scoreless for the first four minutes of the half, as HU went on a 14-3 run to take command of the game.
A spurt by Morgan State mid-way through the half was capped by a Tia Henry jumper at the 12:02 mark. The Henry jumper cut the Pirate lead to 8 points, but that would be as close as MSU would get for the balance of the ballgame.
The Hampton lead would eventually ballon to 20 points, as they controlled the pace down the stretch to beat MSU for the 6th consecutive time.
Morgan State was led by Candace Holmes who poured in 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Holmes was 2 of 10 from the field, but hit 6 of her 9 free throws.
Tia Henry was the only other Lady Bear in double figures, as she also pumped in 10 points.
Hampton was led by Sharema Dean who had a monster game. Dean scored 22 points and snatched 10 rebounds. Lynetta Sullivan had an 18 point night and Nicole Brathwaite added 17 points to the Pirate cause.
MSU went into the game without the services of sophomore Jennyffer Vargas who is nursing a knee injury. Vargas is leading the MEAC with 50 blocked shots for the season.
Morgan State returns to action this weekend when they travel to Daytona Beach, FL on Saturday, February 7, 2004 to take on the Bethune-Cookman College Lady Wildcats.
Tip-off at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach is set for 2:00p.m.
