Box Score
The Morgan State University Lady Bears (2-22, 2-13 MEAC) had a tough time on the boards, and were unable to hold onto a half-time lead in falling to the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State 74-59 in Orangeburg, SC on Saturday evening.
The Lady Bears were looking for the season sweep over SCSU after defeating the Lady Bulldogs in double-overtime last month at Morgan's Hill Field House. But it was not to be. MSU fought hard to take a 27-25 lead into the locker room. However, Morgan State could not hold the lead in the 2nd half, as they fell in conference on the road for the 20th consecutive time. Â
The last road MEAC win for the Lady Bears came back in February of 2002 when MSU went to Greensboro, NC and knocked off the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T.
The Lady Bears had one of their better shooting days against SCSU, hitting 48% of their shots from the field. But Morgan had a tough time on the boards. The Lady Bulldogs out-rebounded Morgan 48-28, and had a commanding 26-6 edge on the offensive glass.
Turnovers were once again a problem for the Lady Bears. MSU turned the ball over 24 times, leading to easy shot opportunities for The Lady 'Dogs.Â
Morgan was led by Sharonda Watson who poured in 21 points. Ms. Watson was 5 of 8 from 3-point range. Ironically, Sharonda had a Morgan State record (8) 3-pointers against South Carolina State in a Lady Bear win in January. (13) of her team high (26) 3-pointers have come against SCSU.
Whitney Johnson had a 20 point and 5 steal night for the Lady Bears. Whitney hit 9 of 12 from the field. MSU got 8 points and 4 rebounds from Sarissa Gaskins.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Evena Morency, who had a monster game. Morency had 21 points and 18 rebounds. Latasha Cook had a 16 point performance and Rochelle Brown contributed 10 points to the Bulldog cause.
MSU returns to action on Monday, February 23, 2004 when they tangle with the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, NCÂ @ 5:30p.m.Â
