Bears Drop Rivalry Game Against Coppin State

BALTIMORE, MD – Morgan State entered tonight’s game attempting to gain their second conference win of the season and improve upon its 2nd place ranking in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

However, cross-town rival Coppin State shot 51% in the second half to help the Eagles pull out a hard fought 66-62 victory in front of 3,417 fans in Hill Field House.

Nicholas King and Raheem Scott led the Eagles with 14 points and seven rebounds apiece. Darryl Proctor chipped in 13 points (5-6 FT).

Both teams played to a standstill throughout the opening minutes before senior Aaron Andrews scored on a putback basket to ignite a 7-1 run to lift the Bears to a 20-13 lead with remaining in the half. But Coppin State answered as they manufactured points from the free-throw line (9-12 FT) and headed into the break leading 29-27.

Morgan State struggled in the opening minutes of the second half as the Eagles defensive pressure forced Bear miscues. Coppin State capitalized by soaring out on a 13-1 run and led the ballgame 49-36 with remaining.

The Bears mounted a comeback toward the end of the game as they were able to get three-pointers from Sam Brand, Karanvir Aujla, and Aaron Lawler to cut the Eagles lead to 56-50 at the mark, but it was as close as they would get.

Morgan shot 37 percent (20-54) for the game, while the Eagles finished by shooting 48% (22-for-46) from the floor. 

Brand led the Bears with 16 points (4-7 3FG) and finished with six rebounds. Aaron Andrews collected his first double-double of the season by scoring 12 points and grapping 12 boards. Senior Chris Grant finished with a game-high 6 assists and scored 15 points (9-15 FT), while Aujla added 9 points (3-5 3FG).

The Bears struggled from the free throw line. Coppin State shot 67 percent (18-27), while the Bears shot 13-for-24 (54%) from the stripe.
