The Morgan State University Lady Bears (1-17, 1-8) struggled offensively on Saturday afternoon, and remain winless on the road this season. MSU dropped a 75-49 decision to Norfolk State at Echols Arena in Norfolk, VA.
MSU had a tough time putting the ball in the hole. The Lady Bears shot only 27% from the field for the game, and didn't help themselves by committing 30 turnovers. Nobody wearing the Blue and Orange could find their shooting touch in a game played in front of 531 fans on the Norfolk State campus.
The Lady Bears did get off to a decent start. MSU held a 13-11 lead with 12:28 left in the first half after a lay-up by Candice Holmes. However, Morgan State turnovers turned the tide for Norfolk State. The Spartans seized the momentum and took a 38-28 lead into the locker room at intermission.
The Lady Bears made a 2nd half run, pulling to within 42-36 with 16:11 remaining in the game, but NSU responded with a 10-0 run to break the game wide open.
After the Spartan 10-0 spurt, the Lady Bears would never again seriously challenge for the lead.
MSU Junior Sharonda Watson was the only Lady Bear in double figures with 10 points. Sophomore Jennyffer Vargas played only 14 minutes due to an injury, but managed to block 5 shots. Vargas continues to lead the MEAC, and is 10th in the nation with 50 blocked shots for the season.
MSU held the Spartans to only 35% shooting for the night, but it was more than enough to keep the Lady Bears at bay and give NSU their second win in their last three games.
Norfolk State was led by Yomika Corbett who recorded 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Alicia Burke had a career high 17 points for NSU.
The Lady Bears will return home on Monday, February 2, 2004 to take on the Hampton University Lady Pirates. Tip-off at Hill Field House is set for 5:30p.m.
