Freshman Whitney Johnson pours in 14 points vs. Yale Bulldogs
Box Score
The Morgan State University Lady Bears gave Yale University all they could handle Wednesday night. However, MSU came up a little short in falling to the Bulldogs 73-62 in a game played in front of 105 fans in New Haven, CT.
The Lady Bears (1-15, 1-6 MEAC) were hitting some outside shots early in the contest, but were unable to sustain the offensive flow. They stayed on the heels of the Yale Bulldogs (3-11, 0-1 Ivy) for virtually the entire ballgame, but could never grab the lead.
MSU did a great job of protecting the basketball, committing a season low 17 turnovers. But the outside shots stopped falling, as Morgan State hit only 6 of 22 (3)-pointers.
The Lady Bears did have four players in double figures. Leading the way was Javone Davis who poured in a season high 17 points. Davis was 7 of 12 from the field, hitting 3 (3)-pointers.
Latricia Jones had her first double/double as a Lady Bear. Jones scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Latricia added 3 steals, a block and an assist to a very productive evening.
Junior Sharonda Watson contributed 10 points on the evening. Freshman Whitney Johnson also had an active night. Johnson had a 14 point, 5 assist, 3 steal performance for MSU.
It wasn't enough, as the Bulldogs shot 44% for the game, and held the Lady Bears to 36% from the field for the night.
Yale was led by Julie Cohen who scored 14 points. Morgan Richards had a double/double for Yale, pouring in 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Morgan State returns to action on Monday night when they jump back into MEAC play. The Lady Bears will be on the road to take on the Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday, January 26, 2004. Tip-time at the Hytche Athletic Complex is set for 5:30p.m.
