Lady Bears Lose Heartbreaker To A&T

Box Score

The Morgan State University Lady Bears (1-14, 1-6 MEAC) could not maintain a 13 point halftime lead, and fell 49-47 to the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T in a game played Monday evening at Morgan's Hill Field House.

Poor shooting from the field, and 23 MSU turnovers helped A&T get back in the game.  A layup by A&T's Dawn Newsome with 1:46 left gave N.C.A&T their first lead of the game and it would eventually prove to be the winning bucket.

Morgan State was led by sophomore Jennyffer Vargas who collected her second consecutive double/double.  Vargas had a team high 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Jennyffer is the MEAC's leading shot blocker, and she had 4 rejections for the evening.

The Lady Bears got off to a quick start, building a 15 point 1st half lead. At the break the Morgan State lead stood at 27-14.

MSU limited the Lady Aggies to 19% shooting in the first half, and held the lead for the entire half.  The Lady Aggies did not score a single point until Camile Aikns hit a jumper with 13:08 remaining in the half.

However things changed after intermission.  The Lady Bears could not genetrate any offense, as North Carolina A&T slowly and methodically chipped away at the Morgan State lead.

MSU shot only 21% from the field for the game, and just 28% for the game. The Lady Bears did a good job on the boards, out-rebounding the Lady Aggies 50-29.

The Lady Aggies comeback was fueled by Camile Akins who scored 16 of her game high 24 points in the 2nd half.  Ms. Akins was 10 of 13 from the free throw line for the evening. She was also active on defense, grabbing 5 steals.

Morgan State junior Candace Holmes had a productive day. She scored 9 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Lady Bears return to action on Thursday, January 22, 2004 when they travel to New Haven, CT to take on Yale University. Tip-time is set for 6:00p.m.
