Lady Bears Drop Home Opener To Towson University

Box Score

The Morgan State University Lady Bears (0-9, 0-1 MEAC) got off to a slow start, and never really got the engine started as they fell to the Towson University Lady Tigers (6-1, 0-1 CAA) 66-47 in their home opener Monday night at Hill Field House on the MSU campus.

The Lady Bears struggled for offense all evening, shooting only 32% from the floor for the night and only 24% in the 1st half.  21 turnovers didn't help, and the Lady Bears were out-rebounded 44-33.

MSU also had a difficult time from the charity stripe, hitting only 39% from the line.

The Lady Bears also had to play without their leading scorer Erinn Coleman who is nursing a knee injury.

MSU found themselves down 12-2 after the first five minutes of the game, and could not mount a serious run at the Tigers.

TU was very aggresive on the offensive glass, and used their 2nd chance scoring opportunities to get some high percentage shots.  It helped them take a 39-17 lead into the locker room.

MSU had a quick 6-0 spurt at the start of the second half.  However, after a timeout, the Tigers answered with a run of their own, and the Lady Bears never seriously threatened for the balance of the ballgame.

MSU was led by Candace Holmes who posted her 3rd double/double of the season.  Ms. Holmes scored 18 points, and grabbed 14 rebounds.

Freshman Whitney Johnson was also in double figures. She poured in 13 points for the Lady Bear cause.

The Lady Tigers were led by Kelli Talbot who scored 13 points for TU.  Meanwhile, Armina Frazlic had 10 points to go with a team high 13 rebounds.

MSU will return to action on Saturday, January 3, 2004 when they host the Bethune-Cookman College Wildcats in MEAC play. That game is set for 2:00p.m. @ Hill Field House on the Morgan State campus.
