Lady Bears Get Clipped By Coppin State

Box Score

The Morgan State University Lady Bears (0-6, 0-1 MEAC) placed four players in double figures, and had their biggest offensive output of the night. However, it wasn't enough as they fell to Coppin State Wednesday evening at the Coppin Center by a final score of 86-60.

For much of the first half the Lady Bears matched the bigger, and talented Lady Eagles bucket for bucket.  In spurts, MSU controlled the flow and tempo of the game.  But the ladies could not sustain their intensity for the duration, and Coppin State pulled away late in the half.  MSU never really challenged in the 2nd half.

Coppin enjoyed a tremendous advantage on the boards.  The Lady Bears were out-rebounded 55-27, and the Lady Eagles dominated the offensive window (26-5).

MSU's leading rebounder Candace Holmes was in early foul trouble, and was limited to just 14 minutes of playing time.  The Lady Bears also committed 29 turnovers in the game and were held to only 18 shots in the 1st half.

Coppin State was able to break open a close game with a 13-2 run late in the first half, and never allowed Morgan to get within 15 points for the remainder of the evening.

MSU had their most balanced offensive game of the season.  Four Lady Bears scored in double figures for the evening.  Morgan State was led by sophomore Jennyffer Vargas who poured in 14 points and led the squad with 9 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 blocks.

Freshman Whitney Johnson had a productive game, scoring 13 points on 5 of 11 shooting from the field.  Junior Sharonda Watson also had a 13 point game, including shooting a perfect 7 for 7 from the free throw line.  Ms. Watson has hit 14 consecutive free throws over the last two ball games.

Senior Erinn Coleman scored 12 points against the Lady Eagles.

Coppin State was led by Antoinette Reese, who scored 16 points. Sherrie Tucker had a 15 point evening.

The Lady Bears return to action on Saturday,  Dec. 13th to take on Georgia State in the first game of a two day tournament in Atlanta, GA.
