Lady Bears Fall To Women Of Troy In Exhibition Basketball Opener

Box Score

The Morgan State University Lady Bears showed some encouraging signs, but were unable to hold off the Virginia State Trojanettes in their exhibition opener.  MSU fell 70-52 in the game played at Hill Field House Saturday night.

MSU held a 25-24 lead at the half, but could not sustain their defensive intensity in falling to Virginia State.  VSU shot only 34% in the first half, but managed to connect on a 55% clip after intermission.

It was a game of spurts, and a 17-6 spurt by Virginia State midway through the 2nd half seemed to put the game away.  Morgan State would not recover, and they fell in their first test of the 2003/04 season.

MSU was led by senior Erinn Coleman (Sacramento, CA/Sheldon HS) who scored 17 points. She was the only Lady Bear in double figures.  However, freshman Whitney Johnson (Detriot, Michigan/Mercy HS) had a 9 point evening in her first game in the Blue & Orange.

Juco transfer Candace Holmes (Fairfield, CA/Solana Community College) had an active evening, grabbing 5 rebounds and scoring 6 points before fouling out.

VSU had a balanced scoring attack, led by Areyal Hall who had 17 points.  Felicia Gibbs had a 14 point evening. Alonna Marable and Erica Glasper chipped in 12 points apiece.  Hall led the way on the glass with 11 rebounds.

MSU will open regular season play on November 21-22, 2003 @ the Marshall University Tournament in Huntington, WV.
