The Morgan State University Lady Bears (0-5, 0-0 MEAC) continue to play improved basketball, but still haven't been able to post that first win of the season. MSU fell 74-55 to Portland State University in the consolation game of the North Star Invitational Tournament on Saturday evening in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The Lady Bears shot only 32% from the field, and were out-rebounded 41-23 by PSU in a game played in front of 827 fans at the Patty Gymnasium in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Morgan State had a tough time shooting from long distance, as the Lady Bears hit only 2 of 14 shots from 3-point land. However, MSU was flawless from the free throw line. The Lady Bears were a perfect 13 for 13 from the charity stripe.
MSU placed three players in double figures in scoring for the first time this season. Morgan State was led by Erinn Coleman who scored a season high 15 points on 5 of 11 from the field and a perfect 4 for 4 from the free throw line.
Junior guard Sharonda Watson had a season high 14 point effort for MSU. Watson hit all 7 of her free throws.
Freshman Whitney Johnson had a season high 13 points on 6 of 12 shooting from the field.
Morgan State had a season low 15 turnovers in the game.
Portland State was led by Sarah Hedgepeth who scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Carrie Mitchell scored 14 points for PSU.
The Lady Bears retun to action on December 10th when they are on the road to take on Coppin State College in their first MEAC game of the season. That contest is scheduled for a 5:30p.m. tip at the Coppin Center.
