The Morgan State University Lady Bears (0-4, 0-0 MEAC) had their best offensive output of the season, but it wasn't enough as they fell to the Nanooks of the University of Alaska Fairbanks in the opening round of the North Star Invitational Tournament. MSU dropped their 3rd straight of the season 73-52.
The game was played in front of 803 fans at Patty Gymnasium on the UAF campus. It was the first ever intercollegiate competition for Morgan State in any sport in Alaska.
MSU battled UAF early, but had difficulty matching the Nanooks at the free throw line. UAF made more free throws (24) than the Lady Bears attempted (17). The Nanooks also hit 7 of 15 shots from beyond the arc, and that proved to be the difference in the game.
The Lady Bears were led by Candace Holmes who poured in 13 points on 6 of 8 shooting from the field. Holmes also pulled down 7 rebounds.
Senior Erinn Coleman had a 12 point day for the Lady Bears.
Morgan State was led on the boards by Latricia Jones who grabbed a season high 9 rebounds.
The Nanooks were led by Cody Burgess who led all scorers with 21 points, including hitting 9 of 10 from the free throw line. Adrienne Taalak had 13 points for UAF.
The defeat means the Lady Bears will meet Portland State in the consolation game of the tournament on Saturday evening.
