Morgan State quarterback Bradshaw Littlejohn enjoyed a productive day, as he rushed for 89 yards and two touchdowns to help lead the Bears to a, 33-12, victory over Howard University. The game was played before 14,576 fans on a Homecoming Saturday afternoon at Hughes Stadium. It was the Morgan State’s fourth consecutive homecoming victory as the Bears improved its slate to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the MEAC, and the Bears victory snapped Howard’s two-game win streak.
Morgan took advantage of an early Bison turnover when defensive back Clifford Johnson raced 17 yards to the Bison 9 yard line following a fumble by running back Antoine Rutherford. The Bears offense settled for a 24-yard field goal by Jon Voroshilin to give Morgan a 3-0 advantage with 7 minutes remaining in the 1st quarter.
The Bears defense had a hard time slowing down the Bison pass attack during the second quarter. Howard quarterback Marcos Moreno completed nine of his first 10 passes, driving the Bison 71 yards on 13 plays, capped by a 26-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Brewer. Vaughn Waters’ extra-point attempt was blocked as the Bison took a 6-3 advantage. Moreno connected for another score when he found Brewer sprinting open down the middle of the field for a 27-yard touchdown, extending its lead to 12-3.
Brewer finished the day with a game-high 10 catches for 149 yards, including a 50-yard reception.
The Bears used a 28-yard field goal by Jon Voroshilin to cut into the lead. After holding Howard to a three-and-out, the Bears’ Antoine Elder blocked Shaun Miler’s punt at the 7, and teammate Earl Johnson recovered in the end zone to put Morgan on top, 13-12, as the Morgan faithful looked on.
The Bears shutout Howard during the second half, as Littlejohn scored on a pair of 1-yard keepers to extend Morgan’s lead to 26-12.
Craig Nelson had a solid performance from his tailback position (23 carries, 78 yards) and the Bears racked up 202 yards rushing, and for the first time all season the team did not commit a single turnover.
Senior strong safety Thomas Potts cushioned the Bears’ lead when he picked-off backup quarterback Ronald Venters and dashed 83 yards for the final score of the game.
Potts’ interception return for a touchdown was the first since cornerback Jamar Williams picked-off a pass and raced 53 yards for a score on Nov. 3, 2001.
Howard’s quarterbacks connected on 17-of-34 passes for 205 yards and four interceptions.
Once again the Bears defense stepped up and played big. Larry “Choo Choo” Davis recorded a career-high two interceptions from his defensive back position, while linebackers Vincent Brown and "Shannon Maynard" ("MayDay") collected a game-high 10 tackles each. For the third time this season the Morgan defensive unit held a team to under 100 yards rushing, as they limited the Bison to 69 yards on the ground.
Morgan will attempt to keep its win streak alive when they travel to take on Delaware State (0-6, 0-2) in Dover, DE. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
