"Haylee worked really hard in the offseason and really turned into a leader on the field and it showed with her offensive performance this year," said Morgan State head coach
Larry Hineline. "She really worked hard with the hitting coach and you could see the sense of dedication in her play and in her practice. So she worked hard for her award."
Bobos started 40 of the 44 games played and led the Lady Bears in batting average at .366, homeruns (6) and RBIs (36). She would finish second on the team in hits (41) and total bases (69), while recording nine hits, eight doubles, a triple and 13 walks in 112 at bats.
Bobos would rank in the top five among MEAC leaders in slugging percentage, RBIs and sacrifice flies.
A native of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Bobos began the season hitting a first inning grand slam in the season opener against Akron (2/8) at the Presbyterian Blue Hose Invitational. She would hit her second grand slam of the season in the third inning of Game 2 at Howard (4/13) to give Morgan State a 7-2 cushion.
"I am honored to be recognized by the coaches and sports information directors. It was a great feeling also knowing my other teammates were honored along with me," said Bobos. "I think this shows the hard work and dedication that our team put in every day to continue to get better and win games. Even with no post-season, we played with a vengeance and wanted to show everyone what our team was capable of."
Joining Bobos on the All-MEAC second team are Kiara Hurley (North Carolina Central), Hunter Halford (Norfolk State), Xzarria Simmons, Kalita Dennis and Camile Navarro (Howard), Jordan Casey and Jonah Cunnigan (Delaware State), Tyra Bowers (Florida A&M), Stacie Smith (Savannah State) and Zadaisha Waddell (North Carolina A&T).
"It boosts my confidence even more, especially the way this season went. It feels great knowing that I'm leaving a mark with other teams when playing them and am a pitcher that other coaches and sports information look towards as being one of the top," said Rundlett on being named to the All-MEAC third team. "I work on pitching in the off season and year round with a little break in the summer so I can help my team out the most I can and be the best I can be for them."
Rundlett appeared in 34 games, making 27 starts and pitched 14 complete games, all career highs for the Lady Bears. She finished with a team-leading 5.59 ERA and went 15-15 to record a season-best for victories, surpassing her 12 wins in 2018. She also added one save.
"This season went a little different than everyone thought I think, especially in the beginning and after the season we had last year," said Rundlett. "Everyone worked on whatever they needed to so we would be able to be where we wanted to be as a team. Me personally, in the beginning of this season I was not where I wanted to be. I was struggling for the first half of the season and I worked on specific things that were going wrong while I would pitch. Having a season high of 15 wins personally, I feel was a bigger deal for me because of how I started out slow. We started out 0-11 and turned it around to get over 20 wins again this season. Getting 15 wins helped my confidence go up especially from the beginning of this year because of the way I started out."
The York, Maine native pitched a season-best 151.1 innings and tallied a team-best 73 strikeouts. Rundlett would throw a season-high five strikeouts on five different occasions. She closed out the season winning seven consecutive games, including her last six starts.
She ranked in the top five among MEAC leaders in innings pitched, wins (2
nd), appearances, ad games started.
"Steph [Stephanie] started out slow. We worked on some things and she got her old form back midway through the season and really did a nice job in MEAC play," said Hineline. "Her changes of speeds were working well in keeping hitters off balance and she finished strong which was where we hoped she would finish."
Being named as an All-MEAC selection, might have been extra special for Charles. The senior utility player, who saw action in the outfield, at catcher and at shortstop, transferred to Morgan State and had to wait to be cleared before she could participate with the team.
"It always feels good to see that the hard work, that you put out there for the program is being noticed by others, aside from our school," said Charles. "I had a hard Fall season, not being on the field, or around the team and not really knowing what was going to happen to me. So to be named to the All-MEAC team makes me happy because I feel like I did what my coaches and teammates asked and expected of me."
A native of Amsterdam, Netherlands, Charles hit .336 to finish third on the team in batting average. She started 37 of 39 games she played and recorded 38 hits, 22 runs, nine doubles, a triple, a homerun, 22 RBIs, 52 total bases, eight walks and was 8-for-10 in stolen bases.
"Damishah was a really pleasant surprise. She hit the ball extremely well. We knew she was a good hitter, but she really was able to hit the spectrum of all the pitchers that we faced and was always a threat at the plate," said Hineline. "She did well across the board and we batted her third, because she was probably our most dangerous hitter."
Joining Rundlett and Charles on the All-MEAC third team are Skylar Swain (Norfolk State), Jaelyn Baker (Delaware State), Taylor Rosier, Kimaya Watkins, Hera Varmah and Seriah Brokenborough (Florida A&M), Kaiya Epps-Lee (Bethune-Cookman), Zadia Davis (North Carolina A&T), and Nadia Blevins (North Carolina Central).
