BALTIMORE, Md. (May 9, 2017)-Morgan State junior pitcher Amy Begg was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Pitcher of the Year, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
Begg, who was also named on the first-team, joins fellow teammates Damali Young and Kate Vosper, who were named to the All-MEAC second team and Audrianna Alvarez, who earned third-team All-MEAC honors. Click here.
The honor caps off a jammed packed 24-hour span for Begg, who also claimed three more awards: Morgan State Female Athlete of the Year, Student-Athlete Choice Award Female Athlete of the Year and team MVP accolades the night before during Morgan State's athletic banquet.
"I'm so excited to have received the honor. It definitely exceeded my goal of trying to get MEAC Pitcher of the Week one time this season," said Begg on her MEAC honor. "I feel like it's given me the extra push I needed heading into the MEAC Tournament. I definitely couldn't have had the season I had without the solid defense behind me."
A five-time MEAC Pitcher of the Week selection, Begg was instrumental in leading the Lady Bears to a 23-21 overall mark and 12-6 MEAC Northern Division finish. The 23 wins are second most in school history, just two shy of tying the all-time mark of 25 set by the 1998 team.
The Christchurch, New Zealand native led the Lady Bears and the MEAC in wins with 20, which is also second most in a season at Morgan State. She is just one win away from tying the school mark.
Begg threw a MEAC-leading and school single-season record 170 strikeouts, while also leading the league in ERA (2.25), shutouts (7), complete games (22) and innings pitched (196.1). She also ranked nationally in several categories, including shutouts (22nd), strikeouts (48th) and victories (40th).
Begg, who has amassed 340 strikeouts in her three-year career, threw a career-high 11 strikeouts in a complete game victory over UMBC. Her seven shutouts is a Morgan single-season record and is just one shy of tying the career mark for shutouts with eight.
Joining Begg on the first team are Bethune-Cookman's Kaitlin Alamprese, Kailey Richard, Brianna Sanders and Mariah Davis, Florida A&M's Kenya Pereira, Toni Anderson, Amber Fullwood and Alexis Day, and Maryland Eastern Shore's Adrienne Guerra.
