BALTIMORE, Md. -- The 2008 season of the Morgan State football program began with the start of fall camp Monday (Aug. 11) with the team taking the field for its first practice. Head coach Donald Hill-Eley and his staff had their first chance to see the entire team together on the same field with the inclusion of the incoming freshmen at their first MSU practice.
Reported below are notes about today's first practice:
FALL CAMP ATMOSPHERE
• The team practiced in 76 degree temperature under partly sunny skies.
• Monday was the first chance for head coach Donald Hill-Eley and his staff to see all of the incoming freshmen and returning players together for the first time.
• The offense wore white and the defense blue for the first practice of fall camp wearing helmets and shorts.
• Coach Hill worked with the quarterbacks. “It's been a position that has been a problem for us the last two seasons,” said Hill. “
“ I've been working with our quarterbacks since the spring and I've placed more of an emphasis on limiting their mistakes by improving their decision-making and their mechanics.”
“I was the best QB coach available.”
BEARS PLAYER NOTES
• Sophomore running back Devan James returned to the field for the first practice of fall camp, along with senior Jeffrey Jones and redshirt freshman Keith Lee.
• Senior quarterback Jeremy Glover took a majority of the snaps with the first team offense, followed by senior Mario Melton and Akron transfer Carlton Jackson.
• Sophomore linebacker Fred Davis, a Louisiana-Lafayette transfer, joined Morgan's 90-man list for fall camp and will sport the #2 jersey this season. Davis was a teammate to Devan James, Rodney Etienne and Carlton Jackson during his prep days at Blanche Ely High School in Pompano Beach, Florida.
• Assistant Coach Gary “Flea” Harrell recorded his first practice as a new member of the MSU football staff.
• Senior Jarrell Guyton, a Preseason All-MEAC First-Team selection, anchored the defense from his middle linebacker position.
• The Bears will begin full contact drills on Thursday, August 14th.
