Richard Johnson is a highly dedicated, goal-oriented football coach. As a former professional player and educator, he brings a strong background in coaching, player development, offensive strategy, and leadership. His approach to coaching is built around discipline, toughness, accountability, teamwork, and teaching players to play smart, fast, and physical. With a passion for football, he is driven and committed to developing student-athletes both on and off the field.
Johnson currently serves as the Assistant Wide Receivers Coach at Morgan State University. Prior to joining Morgan State, he served as the Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator at Maryland Prep (JUCO). In 2025, Johnson was named Coach of the Year after helping lead one of the most productive offenses in the program. That season, his quarterback became the first in school history to throw for 3,000 yards and 45 touchdowns, while two wide receivers finished with more than 1,000 receiving yards.
His coaching experience also includes serving as an Assistant Quarterbacks Coach at Howard University in 2024 and Wide Receivers Coach at McDaniel College in 2023. While at McDaniel, Johnson coached three receivers who went on to break school records in receptions and receiving yards.
Before beginning his coaching career, Johnson played collegiate football at Virginia Tech, where he was named to the All-Big East Freshman Team, served as a team captain, and set multiple school records. He later continued his career professionally in Arena Football, winning three Arena Bowl Championships, earning four All-Star selections, serving as a team captain, and earning League MVP honors.
Johnson holds a Bachelor of Arts in Teaching and Learning Secondary Education. His experience as a player, educator, and coach has shaped his approach to developing athletes. He believes in preparing players to understand the game, compete at a high level, handle their responsibilities in the classroom, and develop the character and leadership skills that will serve them beyond football.
