Tykyrah Williams enters her second season with the Morgan State women's basketball program as an assistant coach for the 2023-24 campaign.
Williams, who joined head coach Edward Davis’ staff in July 2022, came to Morgan State after spending the 2021-22 season as a graduate assistant at the University of Detroit Mercy.
“It’s great to get back a former player that has grown and matured from her college years and now brings back a coaching expertise that I definitely think will be an effective part of our program,” said Morgan State head coach Ed Davis, Jr.
“It feels great to be able to return to my alma mater. I am happy to be here and wouldn’t want it any other way,” said Williams. “I thank Coach Davis for giving me the opportunity to be a part of something great.”
No stranger to Morgan State and the Lady Bears’ program, Williams was a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter for the Lady Bears from 2014-18. Williams finished her career scoring 1,068 points and pulled down 589 rebounds to become the seventh player at Morgan State to record more than 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. She ranks 13th all-time in scoring, 10th in rebounding and 12th in steals on the Morgan State career charts.
“Just being able to walk in here and see the same faces just made me feel like I was home again,” said Williams of her return to Morgan State and first day as a coach. “These are the same great people I’ve previously built relationships with.”
Williams continued her career playing professionally overseas in Ireland, spending half of the 2018-19 season with the Killester Basketball Club. She also coached a 13U Killester girls basketball team. She would leave Ireland and go to Kosovo, where she teamed up with former Morgan State teammate Braennan Farrar to win a regular season title as well as the Kosovo Cup championship.
Williams spent the 2019-20 season playing with the Krofdorf Knights in Germany, where she averaged 14 points and seven rebounds a game, while shooting 46 percent from three-point range, before the season ended early due to Covid pandemic.
Williams began her coaching career as a camp counselor with Nate James and Chris Carrawell Basketball Camps in Durham, N.C. She also volunteered her time with the YMCA in Baltimore, Md. for three years.
A native of Durham, N.C., Williams graduated with a degree in Sociology from Morgan State in 2018. She will conclude her Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Detroit Mercy in 2023.
