This is the third in a series of interviews with Morgan State senior student-athletes to celebrate their accomplishments and honor their service and dedication with a Senior Spotlight.
The NCAA canceled all winter and spring sports for the remainder of the academic calendar year. In response to the cancellation of the annual athletics banquet, this would give our senior student-athletes a sense of accomplishment and closure.
The third student-athlete is senior bowler
Diamond Hunter, who is one of the top stars for the Morgan State Lady Bears bowling program. Competing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), one of the most competitive bowling conferences in the nation, is a tough task. Through the growth, Hunter has grown into a serious and focused bowler on the lanes.
A native of Long Island, New York, her first exposure to bowling was through her mother and grandmother. Her family bowled frequently and around the age of five, she started bowling. She casually bowled and then in high school, she started taking the sport seriously. Fast forward to now, she has finished an impressive career for the Lady Bears.
"Diamond is a natural leader. This year she was able to express that in a positive way and prove it to herself," said Morgan State head bowling coach
Thomas Falbo. "She gained the trust and respect of the underclassmen immediately and it grew through the season.
"As a competitor, she was fearless. During the first semester she was among the best bowling in the anchor spot I have seen, especially in Baker play. She always wanted to contribute her scoring to the team. A leader both on and off the lanes."
Hunter discussed her time academically and athletically at Morgan State.
Questions are in
bold, and are followed by Hunter's responses.
Q: How did you first find out that the spring semester would end as we traditionally know it due to the coronavirus? And what was your reaction?
A: I found out on my way to the [United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate] Singles Tournament. The minute we got there, we were notified that it was shut down. Then we got emails about other sports being shut down. We were pretty upset because we wanted to do that tournament.
Q: What are you doing in the meantime? Are you still in the Baltimore area or are you at home?
A: I'm back at home. Just with classes and no bowling. Right now I'm working out, sometimes with a bowling ball, even working on my swing and balance.
Q: You were fortunate to complete your senior season. What are some memorable highlight(s), accomplishments from the season?
A: The team this year was a better environment. There were a lot of fun people to be around. We had fun traveling and participating in tournaments. I think seeing how well my team worked together was a highlight [of her senior year].

Q: What was your time at Morgan State like both athletically and academically?
A: Honestly...it was challenging but I felt like I could do it. It didn't get the best of me. I just had to apply myself in my sport and in my classes, and I did that. And that's what made me excel.
Q: As a departing senior, how would you like to be remembered?
A: I just wanted the campus to know that there's a bowling team. After this year, I think we have really put our mark on campus, especially with our new coach.

Q: How do you feel the coronavirus will affect the team heading into 2020-21 season?
A: For the most part I want to say that the team will be shorthanded. On top of that, the MEAC qualifying events that are used to qualify for the MEAC Tournament, if they are postponed, they may have a problem in the spring when it comes to the MEAC championship tournament.
Q: What are your thoughts regarding the University's response to the coronavirus?
A: Overall, I feel like everyone had a delayed response to the virus due to the newness of the situation. The University did their best to get everyone off-campus. I think with the time the University had, what they implemented [pass or fail] was great.
Q: How has your family been impacted? And thoughts regarding the limited travel on airlines etc.?
A: The family bonding is real. It gives me more time to enjoy my house and be around family. Making sure my family is healthy is my first priority.
Q: How has online/virtual learning been going so far? Any advantages or challenges?
A: It's normal for me since I've taken a lot of online classes before. I just wish that one class didn't get pushed online. The workload for me is about the same.
Q: What's your message for fellow Morganites while they're away from campus during this pandemic?
A: I would tell them to not let this pandemic get the best of them. Don't get too comfortable. I want everyone to stay focused and still perfect their craft in the meantime.
