Morgan State sophomore Mikaela Browdy joined the Lady Bears’ softball team after transferring at the start of the Spring semester. Despite having a short time to get acquainted with her new teammates and coaches, Browdy earned the starting shortstop job and has fit in nicely. In her first season at Morgan State, Browdy looks to play a key role in helping the Lady Bears advance deep into the MEAC Tournament.
The Drums, Pa. native, has started all 19 games for the Lady Bears and is currently batting .204 on the season. She has recorded 10 hits, including two doubles, two runs scored, three walks and 2 RBI, while assisting on a team-leading 42 putouts.
Browdy, who transferred to Morgan State from Lacawanna College, went 1-for-3 at the plate, while driving in two runs in her second game as a Lady Bear against Fairleigh Dickinson (2/10), to help Morgan State to its first 2-0 start since 2009.
The Lady Bears (9-10), who are currently on a two-game winning streak, will host their 2017 home and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener inside the newly refurbished Lois T. Murray Field this weekend against Howard (April 1-2). First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is 1 p.m., followed by a noon start on Sunday.
Student Life:
What is the best time of the year on campus? I'm a spring semester transfer student so I haven't seen much of the sports activity, but so far I heard homecoming seems to be best time of the year. But the Morgan vs. Coppin basketball games are fun to go to.
Why did you choose MSU? I wanted to further my academic career and play Division 1 softball.
If you had to give an incoming student advice, what would it be? Go to class & budget your time.
Describe your first day as a student at Morgan My first day went really well actually. I had a pretty good idea of where most things were, but actually found out three weeks into the semester I was going to the wrong English class.
What do you like most about Morgan? I like the environment around the school, in class rooms and on the athletic teams.

I hated it when my mom made me eat? My mom never made eat anything I didn't want to, but my Magra (grandma) always made me eat carrots and that is one I food I still hate.
Sports:
When is your favorite time of your sports season? When conference play starts.
Who is your favorite athlete? Why? Derek Jeter. I have just always loved watching him play, his next play was always better than his last. He was fun to watch.
Who do you model your game after? Alex Hugo
Which team do you most look forward to competing against? This is my first season since I'm a spring transfer, but my team says Coppin is always an interesting game for us.
Do you have any pre-game/match superstitions or rituals? I have to all my jewelry on when I play and listen to music before the game.
What is your favorite part about your sport? That anything can happen at any moment
If you could play another position, what would it be and why? First base, just because it seems like fun position.
What is your favorite athletic memory? In my senior year of high school my basketball team & I won the conference and got to cut the nets down and then we had the music in the background and all the fans on the court with us!
Favorite pro sports team? Boston Red Sox
What is your top skill? I like to consider defense my strong suit.
When did you start playing softball? I started playing when I was nine.
Miscellaneous:
Would you rather be rich or famous and why? Rich. I rather have money and be able to spend it without the hassle of everyone knowing me and my business.
If you could do one thing over, what would it be? Go back to when my travel team played in Canada and we won an international championship.
When you are not at practice, what could someone find you doing? Sleeping most definitely.
If you could play another sport, what would it be? I would go back to basketball. I've been playing since I could walk.
If you were a superhero, what would be your superpower? Probably to be able to teleport
Do you have an interesting nickname? I have a bunch of nick names. Mik, Browdy are the most common. My team calls me McBrowdy! It's rare if someone does call me Mikaela.
If you could witness any event of the past, present, or future, what would it be? The royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? Whatever you decide to do in life make sure you're happy.
What is one thing people don't know about you? I have a bad habit or biting my nails.
If I could change one thing about myself, it would be? I wish I was a tad bit taller.
What are your goals in life? To be successful in wherever my career takes me and to raise a big family.
Person you admire the most? Person I admire most is my basketball coach from high school Kathy Passon. She is my biggest supporter besides my family in sports and in school and really pushes me to just be my best. She is a genuinely kind hearted person who I got the pleasure to play for.
Coolest thing you did last summer? I actually didn't get to do much last summer besides play softball and just hangout with friends.
Most prized possession? My bear that I've had since I was probably four that I still have.
If you could have dinner with three people, dead or alive, who would they be? Kevin Hart, Amy schemer and Derek Jeter.
Dream event? Wedding.
My hometown is known for? Joe Madden, Chicago Cubs head baseball coach.
