Morgan State Drops MEAC Opener At South Carolina State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (March 14, 2026)--The Morgan State Lady Bears opened the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) slate with a doubleheader loss at South Carolina State on Saturday afternoon at Lady Bulldog Softball Field. The host Bulldogs would win the opener 4-3, followed by a 7-4 victory to win the series.

Morgan State (1-14, 0-2 MEAC), has dropped four consecutive games, and has now lost three straight to S.C. State. The Lady Bulldogs ended their two-game losing skid and improved to 5-8, 2-0 MEAC.

Morgan State took a 1-0 lead in the opening game when Hunter Newman singled in Olivia Pagano in the first inning. S.C. State tied the score in the bottom half of the inning when Kylie Nelson grounded out at second to score Lashea Morlu.

The Lady Bears reclaimed the lead in the third when Gianna Ettore grounded out to second to score Millie Cousins. But again South Carolina State would even the score, this time on Morlu's  RBI single to score Madison Boyd.

Following a scoreless fourth inning, Morgan State scored in the fifth inning when Pagano homered to put the guests ahead 3-2.

Once again the one-run would not hold up or be enough, as the host Lady Bulldogs would take the lead for good on a two-run homer from Morlu in the bottom of the fifth, which would hold up.

Morgan State would put together one last scoring opportunity in the top of the seventh when it had runners at second and third with one out. But S.C. State pitcher Dymond Round got the next two Morgan batters to pop up and fly out, respectively to end the game.

Round would go the distance for the Lady Bulldogs, surrendering three runs on eight hits and a walk, while striking out five.

Cousins, who was tagged with the loss, struck out three.

NEXT UP: Morgan State will look to salvage a game, when it wraps up the series on Sunday at 10 a.m.
