Morgan State Wrestling’s Eugene Harney Continues to Rise, Building a Legacy

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 11, 2025) -- Redshirt freshman Eugene Harney continues to make noise on the national wrestling scene, climbing again in the latest national rankings.

The Cincinnati, Ohio native moved from No. 27 nationally at 149 pounds in the latest InterMat rankings to No. 24, fresh off capturing Morgan State's first-ever Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) championship.

The latest jump continues a steady rise for Harney, who first entered the national rankings at No. 33 earlier this season, showcasing the consistency that has drawn attention from the wrestling community.

In his inaugural season with the Morgan State Bears, Harney has quickly established himself as a formidable contender in the 149-pound division. His impressive form includes a current nine-match winning streak, with his last defeat coming on Jan. 14 against Penn's Cross Wasilewski.

Harney's run has pushed his season record to an outstanding 28-4, including a dominant 13-1 mark in dual matches. His offensive ability is further reflected in six major decisions and four wins by fall, demonstrating his capacity to secure decisive victories.

Harney's individual success is especially significant for the Morgan State wrestling program, which recently revived its varsity team after a several-decade hiatus. His continued climb in the national rankings — along with capturing an EIWA title — stands as a testament to the program's rapid resurgence on the collegiate wrestling landscape and signals a bright future for the Bears.

Head coach Kenny Monday reflected on the milestone.

"We're very proud and excited to have Eugene and Yannis represent Morgan State at the NCAA Championships in Cleveland next week," said Monday. "Both young men have climbed in the national rankings — Harney at 24 and Charles at 30. It's an indication of the work they've put in and shows they're trending in the right direction at the most important time of the year. I'm confident they'll wrestle well next week. We are the bad draw in the bracket."
