BALTIMORE, MD — Morgan State University Athletics proudly hosted a National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) Clinic today at Hurt Gymnasium on the MSU campus, welcoming participants for an engaging, hands-on experience across a wide range of sports.
The clinic provided youth with firsthand instruction and exposure to Morgan State's athletic programs, emphasizing skill development, teamwork, and empowerment through sport. Participants rotated through interactive sessions in acrobatics & tumbling, football, tennis, softball, volleyball, track and field, and basketball, led by Morgan State student-athletes.
"It was nice to see not only young girls partake in today's clinic, but young boys too," said Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Communications and Brand Advancement,
Denise Thompson. "To see youth come out and learn a variety of sports and get to meet college students that are currently competing at a high level, helps them to realize that things are very much possible."
The event opened with a wide range of stretch activities led by members of the cheerleading team, before head women's basketball coach Nadine Damond ran through various games and educational tips for all in attendance.
"Doing this event actually made me realize how much of an impact that you can make, especially as a woman in sport today," said acrobatics & tumbling student-athlete Mia Taylor. "All of the little girls giving us hugs and telling us thank you warms the little inner girl in me. When I was little, I looked up to the other little girls, so it's heartwarming that now it's my turn."
National Girls and Women in Sports Day is celebrated annually to recognize the achievements of women in athletics and to inspire the next generation to participate in sports and pursue leadership opportunities. Morgan State's clinic reflected that mission by creating an inclusive, supportive environment where participants could learn directly from collegiate athletes and coaches while building confidence and enthusiasm for athletics.
"Showing up for the youth definitely means a lot. Just being able to be out here and give back, knowing that I'm in a position that a lot of kids look up to and want to be in is motivating," said football student-athlete Seth Parker. "To be a positive role model and for them to see there's an opportunity for everybody as long as you chase your dreams and work hard…you can end up wherever you want to be with whatever sport you want to pursue."
