Morgan State Wrestling's Eugene Harney Climbs National Rankings, Checks In at No. 28

BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 3, 2026) -- The Morgan State wrestling team continues to make noise on the national stage, as sophomore Eugene Harney has solidified his standing among the nation's elite at 149 pounds.

Harney, a Cincinnati, Ohio native, has once again placed Morgan State in the national rankings, earning the No. 28 spot in the latest InterMat poll. He previously debuted at No. 33 on Dec. 2, 2025.

Competing in his first season with the Bears, Harney has emerged as one of the most dangerous wrestlers in his weight class. His recent West Coast trip helped boost his national profile, highlighted by pins over California Baptist and Cal Poly. The Cal Poly victory was especially notable, as it came against then-No. 27 Andre Gonzales.

Those performances improved Harney's record to an impressive 21–4 on the season and showcased his ability to knock off nationally ranked opponents.

The achievement carries added significance for Morgan State, which only recently reinstated its varsity wrestling program after a decades-long hiatus. Harney's continued climb in the rankings underscores the program's rapid rise and growing presence on the national wrestling landscape.

Head coach Kenny Monday praised Harney's progress and confidence on the mat.

"Eugene Harney continues to perform at a high level. Two pins on the Cali trip elevated him back into the national rankings, and the win against Cal Poly's Andre Gonzales, who was ranked #27, was a highlight. Eugene has more wins than anyone in the 149-pound weight class! I'm very proud of his performance, and he just needs to continue wrestling with confidence and believe he can beat anyone in the country."

Morgan State will face a major test on Friday, Feb. 6, when the Bears host No. 16 Lehigh in an Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) dual meet at Hurt Gymnasium. The matchup will give Harney and the Bears another opportunity to prove themselves against one of the nation's premier programs.
