Morgan State Wrestling’s Rising Star

Sophomore Eugene Harney, Now No. 27 and Counting.

BALTIMORE, Md. (February 18, 2026) – Morgan State sophomore Eugene Harney is making significant waves in the national wrestling scene, as evidenced by his steady ascent in the latest InterMat rankings. The Cincinnati, Ohio native has now moved up to No. 27 nationally at 149 pounds, a gain of one spot from his previous No. 28 ranking.

This latest jump follows his initial entry into the rankings at No. 33 back on December 2, 2025, showcasing a consistent performance that has caught the attention of the wrestling community.

In his inaugural season with the Morgan State Bears, Harney has rapidly established himself as a formidable contender in the 149-pound division. His impressive form is highlighted by a current seven-match winning streak, with his last defeat occurring on January 14 against Penn's Cross Wasilewski.

This sustained success has propelled his season record to a remarkable 25-4, including a dominant 13-1 record in dual matches. His offensive prowess is further underscored by his statistics in major decisions (6-0) and pins (4-1), demonstrating his ability to secure decisive victories.

Harney's individual success is particularly meaningful for the Morgan State wrestling program, which recently resurrected its varsity team after an extended hiatus of several decades. His continuous climb in the national rankings serves as a testament to the program's swift resurgence on the collegiate wrestling landscape, signaling a bright future for the Bears.

Head coach Kenny Monday reflected on Harney's growth and momentum as the Bears shift their focus toward postseason competition.

"With the conclusion of our regular season dual meets, Eugene's climb in the NCAA rankings is a direct result of his discipline, consistency, and competitive mindset. He leads the 149-pound weight class with 24 wins, holds a #15 RPI, and is ranked No. 27 nationally. We're excited to get back to work and prepare for the EIWA conference tournament in a few weeks."

Harney and Morgan State will look to fine-tune its preparations for the conference championships when it competes at the Patriot Last Chance Open, hosted by George Mason University, on Sunday, Feb. 22, in Fairfax, Va.
