Lady Bears Fall Short To NCCU In Overtime

Tiyanna James scores a career-high 23 points.

DURHAM, N.C. (Feb. 12, 2026)--The Morgan State women's basketball team began the first half of its road trip to the Carolinas with a visit to North Carolina Central for a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game on Thursday evening at McDougald-McLendon Arena.

Like the first meeting last month in Baltimore, it was an entertaining contest and came down to the final seconds of regulation. Only this time, 40 minutes weren't enough, as an extra five minutes were needed.

North Carolina Central's Aysia Hinton drained a deep three-pointer from the left elbow with 10 seconds left in the overtime session to help the host Eagles outlast Morgan State 66-63 to avenge their 64-63 loss at Morgan State.

Hinton, who finished with 10 points, struggled from behind the arc, going 2-for-11 for the game. But her second three-pointer proved to be the difference as it put the Eagles ahead, 65-63.

Morgan State had one last chance but came away empty on a shot inside the paint. Tierney Coleman split a pair of free throws for the game's final score.

Morgan State (3-22, 2-7 MEAC), which is on a five-game losing skid, has now lost three consecutive games to the Eagles in Durham. North Carolina Central improved to 7-15, 3-5 in the MEAC and has won four straight at home.

The loss spoiled a career- and game-high 23-point performance by Morgan State's Tiyanna James. James, who came off the bench, shot 7-of-14 from the floor, knocked down four three-pointers and connected on 4-of-6 from the free throw line. James accounted for 15 of the Lady Bears' 19 third quarter points.

Maya Woodson also came off the bench and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, with 11 boards coming on the defensive end and added two blocks. Michaela Bogans finished with 10 points, five rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block in 36 minutes.

The Eagles were led by Morgan Callahan, who had 22 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to go with a team-high three steals. Aniya Finger came off the bench to score 14 points and had five rebounds, while Natalie Jasper finished with 10 points. Coleman recorded a game-high eight assists, eight points and eight rebounds.

Morgan State, which went on a scoring drought of 6:25 to end the second quarter and trailed 41-26 at the break, overcame the 15-point halftime deficit by turning up its defensive pressure in the third quarter. The Lady Bears frustrated the Eagles, forcing turnovers with a series of traps to get back in the game. James' third quarter scoring outburst also helped the Lady Bears pull within 50-45, heading into the fourth.

The Lady Bears continued to stay hot, scoring 11 straight points to begin the fourth period and take a 56-50 advantage on a jumper by Jael Butler at the 6:13 mark. But Morgan State was unable to put the game away and NCCU would use a 10-2 spurt, capped off by a layup from Finger to give the Eagles a 60-58 lead with 1:19 to go.

Still trailing by two points, Mihjae Hayes drove the lane and scored on a layup to tie the game at 60 apiece with nine seconds remaining to force overtime.

Morgan began the overtime period with James connecting on two technical free throws just four seconds into the extra session, putting the guests ahead 62-60 with 4:56 left in the game. James would add another free throw to extend the Lady Bears' lead to 63-60 with 3:48 to play.

But as was the case during the first half of the game, Morgan State would again be hindered by a scoring drought, as the Lady Bears would go the final 3:48 without scoring another point. Morgan's inability to knock down field goals along with four turnovers assisted in the Lady Bears going the entire overtime period without a made basket.

NCCU finally got on the board in the extra period when Coleman hit two free throws with 1:10 to play. A turnover by Morgan State with 41 seconds left in the game led to Hinton's game changing three-point basket to put the Eagles ahead for good.
