SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (February 1, 2026) -- The Morgan State wrestling team put together a gritty effort on the road Sunday afternoon but fell to Cal Poly, 37–15, in a dual meet at Mott Athletics Center.
Despite the final score, the Bears secured three victories and showed resilience against a Mustang squad featuring several experienced wrestlers across the lineup.
Cal Poly struck first at 125 pounds, where Koda Holeman set the tone with an aggressive performance, earning a technical fall against Julian Dawson, and Anthony Lucio secured a 12-2 major decision against Jimmie Jones, giving the Mustangs an early 9-0 lead.
Morgan State responded with wins in the next two bouts, starting with a forfeit at 141 pounds by Cal Poly.
Eugene Harney
The Bears found the scoreboard again at 149 pounds behind standout Eugene Harney, who continued his strong season. Harney battled Andre Gonzales and trailed late in the bout 5-4, but was able to turn the tide late as he locked in a pin to give the Bears a 12-9 advantage. It marked the second pin of the weekend for Harney, who improved to 21-4 overall on the season.
Cal Poly responded by retaking the lead behind technical falls at 157 and 165 pounds.
Morgan State's final victory came at 174 pounds, where Cort Vann delivered a composed performance en route to a competitive 8-6 decision.
Cal Poly closed the dual with two wins by forfeit in the upper weights, including a pin by Cole Jackson, to seal the 37–15 result.
With the road swing complete, Morgan State will look to build on the individual momentum shown in several weight classes as the team prepares to return to the mat next week.
