Harney Rings in the New Year With a 7th Place Finish at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Jan. 4, 2026) – The Morgan State wrestling team rang in the New Year in strong fashion at the annual Southern Scuffle, hosted by the Chattanooga Mocs at McKenzie Arena.

Standout Eugene Harney opened the calendar year with a seventh-place finish in the 149-pound bracket on Sunday, competing against elite national competition. The nationally ranked Cincinnati, Ohio native entered the weekend with a 13–2 record and showcased his skill on one of the sport's premier stages.

Harney opened the tournament with a dominant performance in the 149-pound Round of 32, earning a gritty 9–2 decision over Duke's SP O'Donnell. He scored a takedown in the closing seconds of the first period, added another takedown in the second following an escape, and traded reversals in the third before sealing the match with a pin at the 22-second mark to take the victory. The win improved Harney's record to 14–2 and secured his spot in the Round of 16.

In the Round of 16, Harney battled No. 11 seed Anderson Heap (Davidson) in a tightly contested bout. Scoreless after the opening period, Harney struck first with an escape in the second to take a 1–0 lead. Heap answered in the third to force overtime, where he recorded a takedown at the 41-second mark of the extra period to claim a 4–1 decision and advanced to the quarterfinals.
