BALTIMORE, Md. (June 10, 2025)--The Morgan State bowling team was recognized by the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) as one of 66 NCAA Bowling programs to earn NTCA All-Academic Team honors, as announced in Smithfield, R.I. It is the first time since the 2021-22 season that the Lady Bears received the team award.
In addition, Morgan State also had six bowlers (
Ayanna Carroll,
Cheyenne Washington, Jamaya Mayers,
Johnna Hill,
Kiara Smith and
Kyra Italien), out of the 397 student-athletes named as NTCA All-Academic Scholar Athletes for the 2024-25 academic year.
Each season the NTCA also recognizes student-athletes who have excelled in the classroom. To be recognized, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher for the academic school year.
In March, Carroll and Smith also received MEAC Bowling All-Academic honors.
"As we strive to be the best on the lanes and off, I could not be prouder of the season our women's bowling team had. Now the season has ended the awards keep coming," said Morgan State head coach Alvin Franklin. "The women's bowling team ranked fourth amongst NCAA bowling programs in team GPA and six of our bowlers made the NTCA All-Scholar team. Great way to end the school year."
Annually, the NTCA recognizes programs that have excelled in the classroom. To be recognized, a program must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher for the academic school year.
Morgan State, which topped the 2020-21 list with an impressive team GPA of 3.840, finished fourth this academic year with a 3.730 team GPA. This season Sacred Heart (3.820) took home highest GPA honors, while Felician (3.779) and Delaware State (3.735) finished second and third, respectively. Monmouth (3.727) came in fifth behind Morgan State to round out this year's top five.
Along with Delaware State, the Lady Bears were one of five Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) teams to be honored by the NTCA: North Carolina A&T (3.680), Alabama Birmingham (3.544) and Howard (3.310).
The Lady Bears were recently honored for having the highest team GPA (3.77) in the Morgan State athletics department during the spring semester.
