Three Bears Earn EIWA Academic Honors

BALTIMORE, Md (May 12, 2025) — Three Morgan State University wrestlers earned Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) All-Academic Awards for the 2024-25 season, the organization announced on Friday. Redshirt senior Darrien Roberts and sophomores Julian Dawson and Kingsley Menifee received the distinction.

The number of student athletes receiving this honor represents nearly 50% of the entire field of wrestlers at the 2025 EIWA Championships. This academic and athletic performance is a testament to their dedication and motivation to excel both on and off of the mat, and to the overall level of academic excellence in the EIWA.

In order to receive the EIWA Academic Achievement Award, wrestlers must have achieved or 3.2 or higher cumulative GPA and participated in the EIWA Tournament or have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and qualified for the NCAA Championships.

Julian Dawson, wrestling at 125 lbs., earned the starting spot at 125 lbs. and recorded pins during five of his seven victories. While navigating the challenges of conference competition, Dawson achieved a 2-2 record in EIWA duals and capped off his season with an eighth-place finish at the EIWA Championships, a testament to his dedication and hard work.

Darrien Roberts, a 174-pound redshirt senior, was a key contributor to the Bears' wrestling team, leading the squad with the second-most wins, compiling an impressive 12-6 overall record. Furthermore, his prowess in dual meets was undeniable, as he secured a strong 8-2 record against his opponents, consistently delivering crucial points for his team.

Kingsley Menifee, a 184-pound wrestler, had a successful second season with the Bears both on and off the mat. Menifee concluded his year with an overall record of 9-10, demonstrating his commitment and progress in the competitive wrestling landscape. His performance in dual meets was particularly noteworthy, as he achieved a 6-7 record, highlighted by securing two pins during the season. This combination of athletic achievement and academic recognition underscores Menifee's dedication and potential as a well-rounded student-athlete.
