Morgan State Drops Series Opener To Norfolk State, 6-1

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 12, 2025)--The visiting Norfolk State Spartans came into Morgan State's Lois T. Murray Field on Saturday afternoon and walked away with a 6-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory over the Lady Bears in the opening contest of the three-game series.

The Spartans' (16-16, 9-4 MEAC) win put a halt to an eight-game losing skid to Morgan State (13-21, 9-4 MEAC) and was just their second victory over the Lady Bears in the last 16 meetings.

Morgan State struck first when Victoria Fletcher doubled to center field to score Amber Rivas for the 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, that would be all the scoring for the Lady Bears on this day.

The Spartans finally got on the board in the fourth inning when Emory Shorts doubled down the right field line to score Ennovi Sandoval and Kailey Bryant to give the guests a 2-1 lead.

Norfolk State went back to work in the fifth inning with two more runs when Sandoval singled to score Kachelle Refour and Qween Olivia Edmonds, extending the lead to 4-1.

The Spartans put the game away with two final runs in the sixth inning. Aniyah Michalak crossed the plate on a passed ball and Kira Turner would steal home for the last run of the game.

Shorts hit 2-for-3 with 2RBI, while Sandoval finished 2-for-4 with a run and 2RBI to lead Norfolk State.

Morgan State was led by Fletcher, who finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Rivas, Gianna Ettore and Morgan Harrell-Alvarez all recorded a hit in the loss.

Fletcher (6-11), who started the game in the circle, tossed a game-high five strikeouts in five innings of work.

Norfolk State's A McPerson (7-5) earned the win after holding the Lady Bears to no runs on three hits, two walks and threw two strikeouts in 3.2 innings of relief.

Next up: Morgan State will conclude its home finale series against Norfolk State with a doubleheader on Sunday, April 13. First pitch is at 12 p.m. Sunday's contest will mark Senior Day at Morgan State. The Lady Bears' Victoria Fletcher, who will be playing in her final home games at Lois T. Murray Field, will be honored prior to the game.
