CLEARWATER, Fla. (Feb. 9, 2025)--The Mogan State softball team concluded its first appearance in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Leadoff Classic with a 12-4 loss to Marshall in six innings in the finale on Sunday morning at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
Morgan State fell to 1-4, while Marshall improved to 1-4 with the win. The Lady Bears were out hit by the Thundering Herd, 15-7. Morgan State also committed three errors.
Amber Rivas led the Lady Bears, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Marshall's Abby Darnley went 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and Paige Simpson finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Both Darnley and Simpson each had 3 RBIs.
How it Happened
● Marshall scored twice in the first inning then added a run in the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead.
● Morgan State's offense erupted for four runs in the fifth inning, capped off with back-to-back RBI singles by Rivas and
Olivia Pagano to even the score at 4-4.
● The Thundering Herd responded with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth. Haleigh Adkins singled to drive in two runs to increase Marshall's lead to 7-4.
● Marshall then exploded for five more runs in the sixth inning for the final score. Leading 8-4, Darnley singled up the middle to score two runs to make the score 10-4. Paige Simpson then doubled to left center to score two more runs to end the game in six innings with the 12-2 victory.
Next Up: Morgan State will head to Elon, N.C. to compete in the Elon Tournament (Feb. 15-16). The Lady Bears will face both Pennsylvania and Elon both days.
