Norfolk State Too Much For Morgan State, 90-46

BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 24, 2025)--Diamond Johnson scored a game-high 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting to lead six Norfolk State players, including all five starters in double figures scoring, as the Spartans defeated Morgan State, 90-46 on Monday evening at Echols Hall.
 
Kierra Wheeler finished with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting and pulled down a game-high seven rebounds and had three blocks, while Danaijah Williams added 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting and totaled a game-high five steals. Anjanae Richardson came off the bench to score 12 points, while Niya Fields scored 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting from three-point range, a game-high eight assists and three steals. Makoye Diawara totaled 10 points
 
The Spartans (24-4, 11-0 MEAC), winners of 13 straight and ranked eighth in the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 poll, shot 34-of-53 (64.2%) from the floor, including 7-of-17 (41%) from beyond the arc. Norfolk State also connected on 15-of-21 (71%) from the free throw line.
 
Morgan State (11-15, 4-7 MEAC) losers of three straight, scored the games' first two points, before the Spartans scored the next 12 points in the midst of a 19-2 run, capped off by a three-pointer from Johnson to put the hosts up 19-4 with 4:55 remaining in the opening period.
 
Norfolk State would hold a 23-14 lead after the first quarter and then outscored the Lady Bears 23-7 in the second quarter to take a commanding 46-21 advantage at the intermission.
 
The hosts scored 11 straight points to cap off a 20-5 spurt to start the third quarter to extend its cushion to 40 points (66-26) with 2:23 left in the third period.
 
Norfolk State, which forced 29 Morgan State turnovers and recorded 18 steals, scored 36 points off Morgan's turnovers. The Spartans finished the game, scoring 48 points in the paint and had 27 fast break points.
 
Morgan State (11-15, 4-7 MEAC) was led by Emily Jones, who scored a team-high eight points, grabbed four rebounds and had two steals. Michaela Bogans came off the bench to score seven points.
 
Morgan State will look to move past this game and prepare for its next game on Saturday, March 1, when it travels to Princess Anne, Md. to take on Maryland Eastern Shore. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. at Hytche Athletic Center.
 
The Hawks (9-16, 4-6 MEAC) were a 70-29 winner over South Carolina State on Monday to end a four-game losing skid. UMES will host North Carolina Central on Wednesday, Feb. 26 before welcoming Morgan State.
