Morgan State Falls to Maryland in Home Dual at Hurt Gymnasium

BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 21, 2025) – Morgan State wrestling battled throughout the lineup on Friday night inside historic Hurt Gymnasium, but the Bears ultimately dropped a 39–7 decision to the visiting Maryland Terrapins.

Maryland improved to 4–0 on the season and extended their series lead over the Bears to 3–0 since 2023. The loss drops Morgan State to 0–4 overall.

The dual opened with a hard-fought matchup at 125 pounds between Morgan State's Jimmie Jones and Maryland's Abram Cline. After a scoreless first period, Cline pulled away with an escape and a takedown, securing a 5–0 victory.

Maryland stretched its lead to 15–0 following a Morgan State forfeit at 133 pounds and a pin by Dario Lemus over Rohan Bucknor at 141 (3:27).

The Bears broke through at 149 pounds behind a standout performance from Eugene Harvey, who struck early with a first-period takedown. He added an escape in the second period and controlled the pace the rest of the way for a 4–0 decision, cutting the deficit to 15–3.

Maryland responded with a victory by forfeit at 157 pounds by Mehki Neal, followed by a 13–2 major decision at 165, where AJ Rodrigues used a strong third period to defeat Joshua Greenwood.

One of the night's most electric bouts came at 174 pounds, where Morgan State's Cortilius Vann delivered an impressive performance against Dominic Solis. Vann led 4–1 entering the final period, but Solis capitalized on a late scramble to secure a takedown in the closing seconds, edging out a 5–4 win.

Morgan's second victory of the evening came at 184 pounds, where Bryce Phillips controlled the action from start to finish, defeating Seth Digby, 11–3, to make it 28–7.

Maryland closed out the dual with two technical falls: No. 17 Branson John topped Erick Washington 19–3 at 197, and Oscar Williams finished the match with a 15–0 shutout technical fall over Eli Turpin, sealing a 39–7 Maryland win.

NOTE THE QUOTE | COACH KENNY MONDAY

"We have some winners," said Morgan State head coach Kenny Monday. "Eugene Harvey is continuing to wrestle hard and consistently. He's a winner. The kid knows how to win. And this guy just lifts the whole room up. So it's good to have the young man. He's a freshman who has a lot in front of him."

"Bryce Phillips had a nice win. Getting in the lineup for the first time… That was his first win in Morgan singles, so that was good."

"But overall, man, we're still banged up. We have some kids hurt. We had three starters out. Our 133-pounder, Javaan Yarbrough, got sick right before the match. And so, that would've been a top-13 athlete he would've wrestled. And that's why we schedule these guys—we want those matches. So it's hard to be competitive when you don't have a full lineup."

"We just have to get healthy. We've got the holidays in front of us, so we need to get healthy, get these kids back in the lineup, and get ready."
