Bears Battle Hard but Fall to Duke and Drexel at Hurt Gym

BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 16, 2025)
-- The Morgan State wrestling team wrapped up the weekend with a hard-fought afternoon inside historic Hurt Gymnasium, falling 28–10 to Duke before dropping a 36–9 decision to EIWA foe Drexel.

In the opening dual against Duke, the Bears battled throughout but ultimately came up short. Javaan Yarbrough (133 lbs) and Eugene Harvey (149 lbs) each secured decision victories, while Yannis Charles (157 lbs) delivered one of the day's most thrilling moments — an overtime win against Duke's Mikey Boulanger. The Blue Devils pulled away late, winning the final five bouts to seal the dual.

Morgan State looked to carry that energy into its matchup with Drexel, and Yarbrough set the tone once again. Facing No. 24–ranked Kyle Waterman (InterMat), he raced out to a 5–3 lead in the first period and extended it to 10–4 in the second. Yarbrough closed it out in the final period, fighting for an impressive 12–2 major decision.

"I saw he [Waterman] was ranked on FloWrestling No. 32, but rankings don't matter," said Yarbrough. "At the end of the day, you wrestle who you wrestle. Whoever's on the mat is not your friend. I just got the job done."

Harvey delivered another standout performance at 149 pounds, pinning Pat Kelly in 6:24 to cut Drexel's lead to 11–9. However, the Dragons responded by taking the final six matchups to secure a 36–9 win.

"I think our guys competed hard," said Morgan State head coach Kenny Monday. "We still have a few of our starters out. At 125, Trey Tecson is still hurt — he's got a little ankle sprain — so he'll be back in about a week or two. At 184, Bryce Phillips is out, but he should be back next week. I think they looked pretty good overall. We have to continue to improve on the small things. It was good competition; it was a good two matches."

"I think Eugene Harvey was probably our best performer. He and Javaan Yarbrough both wrestled two good matches with two good wins. They're leading the pack right now. Yannis [Charles] looked good in that first match — that was a tough one for him to come back and win in overtime. So we just have to keep building and keep working."

"We have Maryland next week, so we have to get back and get ready for those guys. We'll look to have a good week of training and keep building."

Morgan State returns to the mat on Friday, Nov. 21, when the Bears host the Maryland Terrapins at Hurt Gymnasium.
