BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 13, 2025) — Morgan State men's basketball standout Kameron Hobbs has earned significant recognition for his exceptional performance on the court, as he was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week. This prestigious accolade, announced by the conference today, highlights an outstanding week on the basketball court for Hobbs.
Adding to the team's accolades, Daniel Akitoby has also made waves by being recognized as the Defensive Player of the Week. Akitoby's defensive skills have been crucial for the Bears.
Hobbs registered a career-high 40 points in a double-overtime 102-98 win over North Carolina Central. He added seven rebounds and one assist while shooting 54.2 percent (13-of-24) from the field and an impressive 84.6 percent (11-of-13) from the free throw line. Hobbs followed with a 24-point performance at Howard where he added two steals and two rebounds for the Bears.
On the week, Hobbs averaged 32 .0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 steals with a 78.9 free throw shooting percentage.
The Stockbridge, Georgia product has scored at least 20 points in the last 6-consecutive games. It's also the longest streak of at least that long since Isaiah Burke accomplished the feat during the 2022-23 season. Burke had 6-consecutive games with 20 or more points.
Akitoby registered 10 rebounds, six blocks and three steals in the Bears double-overtime victory over North Carolina Central. Akitoby added 17 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks in the 100-95 loss to Howard.
Akitoby has more than thrived on the boards this season. He's started in 14 games and is averaging 6.4 rebounds a game — ranks No. 2 in the league -- helping Morgan rank No. 2 in team rebounds (37.6 avg) and No. 2 in rebounding margin (1.7). He's recorded five double-doubles (points and rebonds) and also ranks No. 5 in the league with 17 blocked shots.
Together, the recognition of both Hobbs and Akitoby highlights the Bears' strength as a team, showcasing a perfect blend of offensive firepower and defensive tenacity. As the season progresses, their performances will be instrumental in positioning Morgan as a contender in the MEAC.
