Morgan State Falls To S.C. State In MEAC Semifinal, 4-0

CARY, N.C. (April 26, 2024)--Morgan State's 2024 women's tennis season came to an end on Friday morning, following a 4-0 loss to top-seeded South Carolina State in the semifinal round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) tennis championship.

Morgan State ends the season at 6-15, while S.C. State (15-4), winners of 17 MEAC championships, advances to Saturday's title match against second seeded Delaware State.

The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 1-0 advantage after winning the doubles point. S.C. State captured a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles and Morgan State's No. 2 team of Iva Jankovic and Averiana Mitchell responded with a 6-0 victory.

It would come down to No. 3 doubles, where Nalanda Teixeira Da Silva and Teodora Vujicic of S.C. State were one point away from winning and taking the doubles point. But Morgan's tandem of Aleksandra Evdokimova and Stefania Moysiadi turned the tables, scoring three straight points to force a 5-5 tie. However, the Lady Bulldogs would regroup and claim the doubles point with a 7-5 victory.

South Carolina State upped its lead to 3-0 when Hind Semlali got past Morgan's Hannah Smith 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles and Teodora Vujicic earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 5 position. The Lady Bulldogs closed the door when Sofiya Chursina defeated Evdokimova, in straight sets 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1.

Morgan State's Lauryn Hall held a 7-5, 3-2 lead at No. 3 singles over and Jankovic had forced a third set at the No. 4 spot 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 but neither were able to finish their matches before S.C. State claimed victory.
