Men's Tennis Hopes Dashed as Howard Steals the Win

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 20, 2024) -- Morgan State University's men's tennis team concluded their regular season on a bittersweet note, falling 4-3 to arch-rivals Howard University in a tightly contested match held at Banneker Recreation Center on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The Bears, who were seeking a victory to bolster their postseason aspirations, fought valiantly but ultimately came up short against a determined Bison squad on their Senior Day.

Howard emerged victorious in a hard-fought match against the Bears, solidifying their position as the fourth seed in the upcoming Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament. With this win, Howard's overall record improved to 5-10, while their conference record stands at 2-3. Meanwhile, the Bears' loss dropped them to 7-12 overall and 1-4 in conference play. The defeat also extended their losing streak to three matches, leaving them with a sense of urgency heading into the tournament.

In the doubles competition, Howard emerged triumphant, securing two out of three matches to establish an early 1-0 lead over the Bears.

The first doubles match witnessed a dominant performance by Justin Cadeau and Michael Major, Jr. of Howard, who secured a commanding 6-2 victory against Mikeal Carpenter and Makkijha Brown of MSU on court 1. Morgan  fought back valiantly in the second doubles match. The duo of Bertin Karenzi and Jaeden Patterson displayed their resilience, but ultimately fell short to Howard's Hassimiyou Dieng and Gable Knowles. The Bison pair executed a 6-4 victory, securing the doubles point for Howard.

In singles play, the first match on court 1 saw Mikeal Carpenter take on Howard's Marcel Dawson. Carpenter started strong, claiming the first set with a comfortable 6-2 victory. He maintained his momentum in the second set, ultimately taking it 6-4 to level the match at 1-1.

On court 3, an exciting matchup unfolded between Justin Cadeau of Howard and Morgan's Rhajzon Rankins. The first set was a close affair, with Cadeau narrowly edging out Rankins 7-5. However, Rankins fought back in the second set, claiming it 6-2 to force a decisive third set. In a thrilling finish, Cadeau regrouped and secured a 6-2 victory in the final set, giving Howard the advantage in the overall match.

The Bears would go on to tie the match at 2-2. Bertin Karenzi played a pivotal role, securing a convincing 6-1, 6-3 victory over Hassimiyou Dieng on court 4.
