Morgan State Splits Doubleheader Against Rider

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 18, 2024)--Morgan State welcomed Rider to Lois T. Murray Field on Wednesday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader and earned a series split. The Lady Bears won the opener 4-0, before dropping a 3-1decision in the nightcap.
 
Morgan State (25-15), which scored four runs on six hits in the opener, got things going with a three-run third inning outing. Amber Rivas singled up the middle to score Anaya Hunte for the first run and Victoria Fletcher doubled to drive in Millie Cousins and Rivas, giving the hosts a 3-0 advantage.
 
The Lady Bears rounded out the scoring when Hunte singled to score Mia Ewell for the fourth and final run.
 
Hunte finished 2-for-3 with a run and RBI and Fletcher drove in a game-high two RBI. Serena Rodriguez picked up the win for Morgan State and improved to 2-0 on the season. Rodriguez went three innings, allowing a walk and striking out three.  
 
Rider (14-24) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in Game 2 on a throwing error in the first inning which led to two runs for the Broncs.
 
Morgan State would cut the deficit in half when Ky'Anah Lake homered in the third inning.


 
Rider added an insurance run in the top of the fifth inning when Jadeyn Merrill singled to score Amanda Cooper and give the guests a 3-1 lead.
 
Lake finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a run and RBI to lead Morgan State. Kristyn Gardner was 3-for-3 with a walk to lead the Broncs.
 
Rider's Kathryn Schmiere (4-5) tossed six a game-high six strikeouts in seven innings to earn the complete game victory. Schmiere would allow just one run on three hits and a walk.
 
Ellie Bostedt (5-5) was charged with the loss for Morgan State. Emily Raubuch threw four strikeouts in 3.2 innings of relief.
 
The Lady Bears are off until this weekend when they host Howard in a crucial Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series, which will put the winner in the driver seat to capturing the regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming MEAC Championship.
 
Both teams enter the weekend tied for first in the league standings with identical 13-2 MEAC records. The series gets underway with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 20 starting at 1 p.m. at Lois T. Murray Field. The series wraps up on Sunday with a single game at noon.
