Niagara Sweeps Doubleheader In Baltimore

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 12, 2024)--Morgan State softball had its two-game winning streak come to an end, following a doubleheader loss at home to Niagara on Tuesday afternoon. The Purple Eagles would win the opener, 9-1 in six innings, before holding on for a 2-0 win in Game 2 at Lois T. Murray Field.

The Purple Eagles improved to 3-5 with the victories, while the Lady Bears fell to 9-10.

Niagara jumped out to an early 3-0 in the top of the first and added two more runs in the second and another in the third to take a 6-0 advantage. After cooling off for two innings, the Purple Eagles were right back at it, scoring three more runs in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run double hit to right field by Selah Moyer, which made it an eight-run cushion. Moyer would later score the ninth run on a single hit by Hailey Cenname.

The Lady Bears avoided the shutout when Maia Wilkins was caught stealing at second, which allowed Ky'Anah Lake to touch the plate for the 9-1 score.

Game 2 was tight throughout. The Purple Eagles would score two runs on six hits, while the Lady Bears recorded four hits and were unable to capitalize on three Niagara errors.

After five scoreless innings, the guests finally broke through in the sixth inning when Cenname doubled to center field to score Lindsay Mayo. Moyer later singled to left field to score Cenname for the 2-0 lead.

Anaya Hunte (3-3) went five innings and tossed a game-high eight strikeouts.

Morgan State will continue its weekday non-conference stretch on Wednesday, March 13 when it visits Delaware to take on the Blue Hens at 4 p.m.
