The Bears Wrap the Weekend Versus American and Drexel

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 4, 2024) -- The Morgan State wrestling team fell to Drexel, 43-0 and host American, 29-13 on Sunday at Bender Arena. Julian Dawson, Jack Marsh and Nate Kendricks recorded a wins against the Eagles to highlight the weekend for the Bears. With its first season back after a 25-year hiatus, Morgan slips to 1-17 overall in their debut season. 

Match 1 - Drexel
Against Drexel,  Julian Dawson started the day off by suffering a tech fall, 20-3, to Desmond Pleasant at 125lbs. John Hildebrandt took the mat for the Dragons at 133lbs. He scored two takedowns and added a pair of back points to enter the second period with an 8-1 advantage. The redshirt freshman added another three points in the middle frame and earned riding time for an 11-6 decision. In the next two matches, Drexel posted wins against Tommy Fiero and Aaron Turner who were both defeated by tech fall. Tyler Williams extended the lead by tech fall against Joshua Greenwood at 157lbs.

The Dragons led 23-0, at the halfway point. At 165lbs, Cody Walsh scored a takedown and four near fall points to help him win an 8-3 decision against Jacob Marsh. The next match was scoreless after three minutes of action. Jack Janda started the second period with an escape and took down Cortilius Vann for a 4-0 decision. In the next weight class, Ethan Wilson matched up against Kyle Grey. A takedown in the middle frame was enough to claim a 4-2 victory. 

Ibrahim Ameer scored six takedowns against Nathanic Kendricks on his way to a 24-4 tech fall. In the final match, Santino Morina pinned Tyler Stewart in 6:05 to clinch Drexel's first win on the afternoon.

Match 2 - American
Against American, Julian Dawson trailed 6-3 heading into the third period before he rallied with a takedown and scored riding time along with a cross face to come away with a hard fought 7-6 victory. The freshman claimed his second dual victory of the season. #31 Maximilian Leete scored an escape and a takedown to help come away with a 4-3 win against Kevin Lopez at 133lbs to tie the match at 3-3. Cael McIntyre needed only 12 seconds to score a single-leg cradle for a pin against Thomas Fierro to extend the Eagles' lead. Next up, the Eagles recorded a pair of major decisions with Ethan Szerencsits posting a win against Turner at 149lbs, followed by Kaden Milhein dispatching Joshua Greenwood at 157lbs to give American a 20-3 advantage. 

Following the break, Jacob Marsh helped get the Bears back on the scoreboard at 165lbs. Marsh started the match with a 1-0 lead before collecting a reversal in the second period and a takedown in the third period to come away with a 7-1 victory against Ryan Zimmerman. The next match at 174lbs between Cortilius Vann and Lucas White was a stalemate in the first period. White held a 2-0 lead after the second period and scored a takedown and was awarded a stall point in the third period to win the match 7-1. The Bears won the next two matches. Kyle Grey was dominant in the 184lbs against Brad Kata. He opened the match with a takedown and continued to roll as he would go on to win 17-4 for his first victory of the season. Nathanic Kendricks added a 6-5 wins against Caleb Beaty at 197lbs. for his second dual win of the season. American ended the match in the win column when #33 Will Jarrell pinned Tyler Stewart in 70 seconds to lead the Eagles to a 29-13 final score.
