Morgan State Drops Fifth Straight; Falls At Delaware State, 57-53

DOVER, Del. (Feb. 29, 2024)--Savannah Brooks scored a game-high 17 points and Deyonce Thompson added 12, as host Delaware State defeated Morgan State, 57-53 on Thursday evening in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest at Memorial Hall.

Delaware State (8-16, 4-7 MEAC), which swept the season series, has won three straight over the Lady Bears. Morgan State fell to 7-19, 2-9 MEAC with the loss and has now dropped a season-high five straight games.

The Lady Bears, who had their four-game winning streak at Memorial Hall come to an end, were led by Jael Butler, who came off the bench to score 14 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Emily Jones scored nine points and had a game-high five assists, while Amari Smith also added nine points and had a game-high four steals.

Morgan State held a 30-28 lead at the break and led 45-43 going into the fourth quarter. Delaware State would hold the guests to 3-of-14 shooting (21.4%), including 0-4 from three-point range in the fourth period, as it outscored Morgan State 14-8 to claim the win.

Following two free throws by Butler, which evened the score at 49-49 with 4:08 to play, Brooks knocked down a three-pointer 11 seconds later to put the Hornets ahead for good, 52-49. Emily Jones scored on a layup with 3:27 remaining to bring Morgan within 52-51. But that was as close as the Lady Bears would get, as Delaware State closed out the game on a mini 5-2 run.

The Hornets shot 44% (23-of-52) for the game and forced 16 Morgan State turnovers, which they turned into 15 points.

Morgan State, which will close out the regular season playing its final three games all at Hill Field House, will host South Carolina State on Saturday, March 2 at 5:30 p.m. for Community/Band/Cheer Day.

The Lady Bears lead the all-time series, 46-40 and have won 11 straight over South Carolina State, including a 65-59 win earlier this season in Orangeburg, S.C. (2/3).

The Lady Bulldogs (2-24, 1-10 MEAC) are coming off a 67-51 loss at home to Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday. Taniya McGowan scored a game-high 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting and Cassandra Colon added 12 points and six rebounds for S.C. State, which suffered its 17th loss in the last 18 games. UMES outscored the Lady Bulldogs, 25-12 in the second quarter to create some breathing room and took a 37-24 advantage into the locker room. The Lady Bulldogs enter Saturday's contest 0-15 on the road this season.
