Lady Bears Drop Two On Final Day Of Liberty Classic

LYNCHBURG, Va. (Feb. 26, 2024)—The Morgan State softball team closed out the Liberty Softball Classic on Sunday with a 6-1 loss to Saint Francis- Pa. and a 10-1 loss in five innings to host Liberty.
 
Morgan State (7-5) concluded the tournament with a 1-5 record.
 
In the opening game of the day, the Red Flash (11-4)  jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second, highlighted by two RBI singles and a double steal, which allowed Orischack to score the fourth run when she stole home.
 
The Red Flash extended their lead to 5-0 when Wilson singled in a run in the third. Marsden capped off the scoring for Saint Francis when she led off the fifth inning with a homer down the left field line to make it 6-0.
 
Morgan State, which left 10 runners on base, recorded four hits in the game. The Lady Bears would avoid the shutout with their lone run coming in the top of the seventh when Amber Rivas scored on a throwing error on the third baseman.
 
Allison Keener went 2-for-3 with a walk to lead Morgan. Rivas finished 1-for-4 with a run and. Victoria Fletcher was 1-for-4. Fletcher (1-1) tossed two strikeouts in three innings of work.
 
In Game 2, Morgan trailed 2-0 after one, when Mia Ewell scored in the top of the second on a throwing error by the right fielder, to cut Liberty's lead to 2-1.
 
The host Flames added three more runs in the bottom of the second, on a RBI single hit down the right field line by Raigan Barrett and Rachel Route later hit a two-run homer to right center to increase the lead to 5-1. Barrett recorded a double in the third inning to score Aubry Norris for the Flames' sixth run.
 
Liberty was back at it in the fourth inning, as Megan Fortner and Brooke Roberts each homered to extend the lead to 8-1. Roupe concluded the scoring when she hit a two-run homer to left center to make it a 10-1 contest.
 
Victoria Fletcher and Ellie Bostedt each had a hit to account for Morgan's two hits in the game.
 
Liberty was led by Roupe, who went 3-for-4 with three runs and a game-high 4 RBI. Fortner was 2-for-3 with two runs and 2 RBI and Barrett finished 2-for-3 with a run and 2 RBI.
 
Anaya Hunte (2-2) was charged with the loss. Hunte struck out two batters in 2.1 innings of work. Emily Raubuch also recorded two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of relief.
 
Liberty's Kaylan Yoder improved to 2-2 with the win. She pitched four innings and had a game-high 10 strikeouts.
 
Next up for Morgan State will be a trip to Waco, Texas to face No. 22 Baylor (8-3) in a three-game series in the Baylor Invitational (March 2-3) at Getterman Stadium.
 
The battle of Bears gets underway with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 2. First pitch is at noon CT, followed by a 2:30 p.m. CT Game 2 start. The Morgan State Lady Bears and the host Baylor Bears will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at noon CT.
