Lady Bears Close Out 2024 Defeating Mount St. Mary’s, 72-68

Morgan finishes non-conference schedule going 5-0 at home.

BALTIMORE, Md. (Dec. 30, 2024)--The Morgan State Lady Bears closed out 2024 with a 72-68 non-conference victory over Mount St. Mary's on Monday afternoon at Hill Field House.
 
Morgan State improved to 7-8 with the win and finished its non-conference slate with a perfect 5-0 record at home. It marks the sixth time since the 2016-17 season that Morgan State has gone unbeaten at home during its non-conference schedule.
 
Tamaria Rumph came off the bench to score 17 points to lead four Morgan State players in double figures scoring, as Morgan State improved to 9-7 all-time against The Mount. Laila Fair added 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while adding five rebounds and three steals. Michaela Bogans and Jael Butler each finished with 14 points. Butler and Fair each recorded a game-high three blocked shots.
 
The hosts shot 50% (25-of-50) for the game and 54.5% (6-of-11) from three-point range. The Lady Bears connected on 16-of-25 (64%) from the free throw line.
 
Mount St. Mary's (2-9) knocked down 21-of-43 (48.8%) shots from the floor and was 8-of-19 (42%) from beyond the arc. The Mount finished the game hitting 75% (18-of-24) from the charity stripe.
 
A three-pointer by Giana Hoddinott brought The Mount within a point at 11-10 with 3:30 left in the first period. Rumph countered with a three-pointer for Morgan State, as the Lady Bears closed out the period with a 9-0 spurt to take their largest lead of the contest (10 points) at 20-10 after a quarter of play.
 
Trailing 39-33 at the half, the guests came out and scored the first six points to start the third quarter and even the score at 39 all. A basket by Rumph ended The Mount's run and put Morgan back in front, 41-39.
 
Garielle Kennerly knocked down a three-pointer to give the guests the lead back at 42-41. But the Lady Bears responded, scoring the next five points to take a 46-42 lead. The Mountaineers countered with a 9-0 run, capped off by another three-pointer by Kennerly, as the visitors held a 51-46 lead with 2:23 left in the third. Morgan closed out the period with a 6-0 run, as a three-pointer by Rumph gave Morgan a 52-51 advantage after three quarters.
 
Morgan scored seven straight points in the midst of a 9-2 run in the fourth, to take a 61-55 lead. The Mountaineers then scored the next six, capped off by a Kennerly three-pointer from the left elbow to even the score at 61 with 2:41 left in the contest.
 
The Lady Bears upped their lead to 68-64 on a layup by Fair with 23 seconds remaining and closed out the contest converting four out of six free throw attempts down the stretch for the 72-68 victory.
 
The Mount was paced by Anna LeMaster, who totaled a game-high 18 points and a game-high three steals. Kennerly added 15 points and Jo Raflo finished with 13.
 
Morgan State will now turn to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play for the remainder of the season. The Lady Bears will begin the New Year hosting South Carolina State in the MEAC opener on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 2 p.m. at Hill Field House. The Lady Bulldogs (1-15) last played on Sunday, Dec. 29 at Mississippi State, where they lost, 95-47.
