The short story: Tamin Lipsey had 20 points and Curtis Jones had 19 points to lead No. 3 Iowa State to a 99-72 win over Morgan State on Sunday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.
OPENING TIP
- Lipsey, a junior from Ames, Iowa, finished with a game-high 20 points on 8-for-9 shooting to lead six Cyclones in double-figures. He also added five assists and three steals in 28 minutes.
- Jones, a senior guard fro Minneapolis, Minn., finished with 19 points, six assists and two blocks in 29 minutes off the bench. Keshon Gilbert scored 18 points (8-9 FG) with seven assists in 31 minutes.
- Senior guard Kameron Hobbs paced the Bears with a game- and season-high 23 points and connected on 10-of-17 from the field and finished with four steals 38 minutes.
- Senior guard Amahrie Simpkins also scored double figures with 18 points (7-13 FG) and had eight rebounds.
THE DIFFERENCE
- ISU connected on 61 percent of their shots from the field and was 7-for-20 (35%)from behind the arc, while the Bears shot 46 percent from the field and connected on 4-of-9 (44%) 3-pointers.
- Morgan shot .667 (10-15) from the free throw line, compared to the Cyclone's .769 percent (20-26).
- The Cyclones dominated in the early going as they raced out to a 17-3 lead. Gilbert made four shots and scored eight points to aid ISU's fast start.
- Morgan responded with a 13-3 run to close the gap to 20-16. Hobbs scored nine points during the stretch, but the Cyclones reeled off an 11-0 run to take a 37-22 lead wit under six minutes remaining in the first half. ISU scored three-straight baskets, including a lay-up at the buzzer, to give the Cyclones a 50-34 lead at intermission. Hobbs had 14 points (6-10 FG) at the break.
- A 3-pointer by Jones gave the Cyclones a 72-49 lead, but the Bears kept playing hard, running off 10-2 spurt to cut the lead to 74-59 with under 10 minutes remaining. It was the closest the Bears got, as the Cyclones led by as many as 24 points a few minutes later behind a pair of baskets from Mila Momcilovic.
- The Cyclones were unselfish with the basketball as well, getting credit for 26 assists.
- ISU outrebounded the Bears by a 35-28 margin.
- ISU scored 23 points off of forcing 13 Morgan turnovers, while the Bears scored 18 points off of 11 ISU turnovers.
- ISU outscored the Bears by a 17-6 margin in fastbreak points.
NOTABLE
- Iowa State leads the series 2-0 since 1985.
- The win marked the 11th game this season the Cyclones have scored 80 or more points, setting a new school-record-streak...in addition to a 25-game homecourt winning streak, the second longest in school history.
- Kameron Hobbs notched his third game with 20 or more points.
