Morgan suffers 78-66 loss to Delaware State

The short story:  Morgan State and Delaware State traded punches for the first 10 minutes Saturday night during the Bears home opener at Hill Field House. The Hornets stretched their lead to double digits at halftime and led by as many as 20 points and staved off any charge by the Bears in the second half to secure a 78-66 victory. The Bears dropped its sixth consecutive game and fall to 4-14 (0-2) on the season, while the Hornets improved to 9-9 (2-0).

 

OPENING TIP

  • Jevin Muniz, a 6-foot-6 sophomore guard from Bethlehem, Pa., put up a game-high 31 points (11-24 FG) and connected on 4-of-8 3-pointers. He also added six rebounds and two assists in 33 minutes.
  • Baltimore product Martaz Robinson scored 19 points with five rebounds, four assists and three steals, while freshman point guard Deywilk Tavares chipped in 11 points (5-12 FG) with four assists.
  • Kamron Hobbs led the Bears with 24 points and connected on 4-of-7 3-pointers to go along with five assists, three boards and three steals in 33 minutes. Redshirt-junior Will Thomas finished with 22 points (9-14 FG) with three boards and two blocked shots.
  • Wynston Tabbs added 11 points (4-11 FG), four rebounds and three assists.
     

THE DIFFERENCE

  • Morgan connected on 38 percent (23-60) of their shots from the field and shot 8-of-21 from 3-point territory. Meanwhile, the Hornets shot 41 percent from the field and connected on just 4 of 16 3-pointers.
  • Morgan shot .667 (12-18) from the free throw line, compared to DSU's 75 percent (18-24).
  • DSU dominated the boards where they held a commending 49-33 advantage, while the Hornets held an 18-11 advantage on the offensive glass.
  • The Hornets' bench outscored Morgan by a 15-3 margin.
  • Will Thomas scored on a jumper to knot the game at 18 with 11 minutes remaining in the half. Kevin Muniz scored inside the paint to jumpstart a 15-4 run. Muniz dished to Kyle Johnson to give the Hornets a 33-22 lead as Morgan called a timeout with 5 minutes left in the half. DSU held a 41-29 lead at the intermission.
  • Morgan used a 7-0 run to chip into the lead and the Bears trailed by seven (43-36) after a jumper by Will Thomas with 17:27 remaining.  
  • Following a DSU timeout, the Hornets kept the pedal to the medal and outscored the Bears 21-8 … a jumper by Deywilk Tavares extended the lead 20 (64-44) with just under 8 minutes left to go.
  • Morgan trimmed the deficit to 70-57 at the 3:34 mark, but DSU never wavered in the final minutes and would go on to cruise to a 78-66 victory.
     

NOTABLE

  • With the loss, the Bears now lead the series 66-45.
  • Morgan's record is currently 0-11 when trailing at halftime.
  • Morgan is 4-3 at home so far this season.

Morgan will have a break before they continues conference play when they face cross-town rivals Coppin State on Saturday, Jan. 20.
