Late Surge Leads Norfolk State Past Bears, 83-73

Wynston Tabbs leads Morgan State with 21 points.

The short story:  Tyrel Bladen had 17 points, Allen Betrand added 16 points  and Norfolk State scored 34 points in the paint in a 83-73 win over Morgan State on Monday night at Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall.

 

OPENING TIP

  • 6-foot-10 forward Tyrel Bladen, who averages 5.6 points per game, paced the Spartans with a career-high 17 points (6-9 FG), including three rebounds 23 minutes.
  • Allen Betrand, a graduate student from Philadelphia, Pa., added 16 points (6-9 FG), while junior guard Jamarii Thomas (UNC Wilmington transfer) chipped in 14 points with five rebounds, five assists and three steals.
  • Redshirt-senior guard Wynston Tabbs, the reigning MEAC Player of the Weekscored a game-high 21 points on 4-for-8 shooting from beyond the arc. He also had three steals in 33 minutes.
  • Junior 6-foot-10 forward Allen Udemadu collected his fourth double-double of the season as he finished with 15 points (5-7 FG) and 10 rebounds. 
  • Redshirt-junior Will Thomas finished with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field in 34 minutes. He also had four rebounds and two blocked shots.

THE DIFFERENCE

  • Norfolk connected on 50 percent (30-60) of their shots from the field and was 9 of 17 from behind the arc, while the Bears shot 49 percent from the field and connected on 6 of 16 (.375) 3-pointers. Morgan shot .850 (17-20) from the free throw line, compared to the Spartans' .737 percent (14-19).
  • Norfolk outrebounded the Bears by a 35-26 margin.
  • The Spartans held the lead for 92 percent of the contest.
  • Norfolk scored 17 points off of forcing 18 Morgan turnovers.
  • The Spartans jumped out to a double-digit lead during the early going. A fast break layup by Darden gave Norfolk an 18-8 lead, and the Bears called a timeout with 12:27 remaining to try and stem the tide. 
  • Norfolk pushed the lead to 12 following a dunk by Tyrel Bladen and a pair of free throws by Jamarii Thomas.
  • The Bears started chipping into the lead behind as they started forcing the Spartans into committing turnovers. Tabbs fed a no-look bounce pass to Udemadu for a dunk as apart of a 7-2 spurt to cut the lead to 26-20 (6:09).
  • Norfolk closed out the half with a corner 3-pointer by George Beale Jr. to push lead to 40-28 at the break.
  • The Bears turned up the pressure following halftime. Tabbs buried a pair of 3-pointers to spark the Bears to cut the Spartans' lead to 44-37. Norfolk coach Robert Jones called a timeout to try and stem the tide.
  • Will Thomas hit a pull-up jumper (15:31) as part of an 11-4 run over a 5-minute stretch. Thomas capped the run with a pair of free throws to trim Norfolk's lead to 52-50 with just under 10 minutes remaining.
  • Norfolk would end up pulling away as they ended up outscoring the Bears 35-23 down the stretch to remain perfect at home with an 8-0 record. 

NOTABLE

  • Monday's contest marked the 65th meeting between the schools ... The Spartans lead the series 45-20.
  • The loss snapped Morgan's 2-game winning streak.
  • The Bears drop to 1-10 in road games.
  • Tabbs' 21 points marked the seventh game he has scored 20 or more points.
  • Sophomore guard Rob Lawson finished with a career-high eight assists.
  • NSU extends to a 4-game winning streak and improved its home record to 8-0 this season.
