BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 28, 2024) -- The Morgan State wrestling team fell to No. 20 West Virginia, 40-3, Sunday afternoon at Hill Field House. The Mountaineers secured three technical falls in three of the first four matches of the day to jump out to a 15-3 lead and never looked back from that point, scoring 25 unanswered points in the final six bouts of the contest.
West Virginia improved to 9-3 on the season and 7-0 record in nonconference action, while the Bears drop to 1-15 overall and 1-4 at home.
Jace Schafer recorded a technical fall at 125 pounds against Julian Dawson to start the match for the Mountaineers.
The Bears responded when Makhare Rogers scored a 7-3 decision over Gahrett Dickerson at 133 pounds tie the match at 3 apiece.
West Virginia would win the remaining matches. #10 Jordan Titus posted a major decision against Thomas Fierro at 141, followed by a major decision by #7 Ty Watters over Aaron Turner at 149. Alex Hornfeck recorded a 4-0 decision over Joshua Greenwood at 157.
Jacob Marsh was outlasted by #8 Peyton Marsh who was able to come away with a 19-10 decision. Jake Blumer scored a late takedown to end the first period against Cortilius Vann and held on for a 4-0 decision.
West Virginia would go on to close out the match with wins at 184, 197 and on by forfeit at 285.
Morgan returns to the mat on Sunday, Feb. 25 for matchups against host American and Drexel. The dual will take place at Bender Arena at 4 p.m. The dual will be broadcast on ESPN+.
