Wrestling Drops Three at Clarion Quad on Sunday

CLARION, Pa. (Jan. 21, 2024) -- The Morgan State wrestling team fell to LIU on Sunday while also facing Kent State and host Clarion at Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium.

The Bears were defeated by the Sharks, 25-9, to open the event.

Robbie Sagaris produced a technical fall at 125 pounds against Julian Dawson to start the day of matches.

Shawn Ryncarz held on for an 11-10 decision over Kaelen Francois at 133 pounds to put the Bears on the scoreboard.

LIU would win the next three matches. Devin Matthews posted a 7-2 win against Thomas Fierro at 141, followed by Aaron Turner dropping a 12-4 match against Drew Witham at 149 and Rhise Royster recorded a 12-6 decision over Joshua Greenwood at 157.  

Jacob Marsh earned a takedown over James Johnston which he cashed into picking up the victory by fall at the 5:45 mark. 

LIU would go on to close out the match with wins at 174, 184 and 197.

Kent State won the final eight contested matches against Morgan to defeat the Bears 38-6. Julian Dawson started off with a pin against Adan Benavidez at the 4:39 mark to collect his first dual win of the season. Pablo Castro and AJ Burkhart recorded falls to highlight Clarion's victory. Billy Meiszner had a dominant performance in a 17-1 technical fall against Thomas Fierro highlighted by a near-fall and four takedowns. Kent State won the other five matches by decision in the decisive win.

The Bears suffered a 50-0 shutout to host Clarion in the final match of the day.  Included in the sweep were eight bonus point victories as well as a sudden victory decision for Brinsky, who took down Jake Marsh in the overtime period for a 5-2 win.

Three matches in the dual were decided by fall, with the first coming courtesy of TJ England. He turned Shawn Rycarz to his back and pinned him just 29 seconds into the match, giving Clarion an 11-0 lead after Joey Fischer led off with a tech fall. David McClelland followed suit in the 141-pound bout, a high-scoring affair that was 10-8 after just three minutes. He worked Tommy Fierro for a pin 39 seconds into the second period, making it 17-0, and Kyle Schickel added on with a major decision at 149 pounds.

The third and final fall of the match came at 174 pounds, with John Worthing notching his fourth win by fall of the year and second of the day. He flattened Cortiliius Vann a little more than halfway through the first period. Alejandro Herrera-Rondon and Cam Pine added tech falls, and Ethan Wiant closed things out with an 8-0 major decision against Nathanic Kendricks to finish off the day.
