Softball Holds Off Delaware State In Finale, 2-1

MSU head coach Larry Hineline ties program record with 161 wins.

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 8, 2023)--Morgan State completed its three-game series sweep of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foe Delaware State with a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at Lois T. Murray Field.

With the victory, head coach Larry Hineline recorded his 161st win at Morgan State, tying him with former head coach Ramona Riley-Bozier as the program's all-time winningest coach.

The Lady Bears, who outscored the Hornets this weekend, 18-1 – including two shutout wins – have now won 17 straight over Delaware State dating back to the 2017 season. Morgan State has held the Hornets scoreless in 12 of those 17 victories.

Morgan State, winners of four straight, improved to 20-13 overall and 10-1 in the MEAC, while Delaware State (6-21, 2-9 MEAC) dropped its eighth straight.

It's the third straight 20-win season for the Lady Bears and the sixth in the last seven years since the 2017 campaign. The 2020 season was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Behind some solid pitching and defense on both sides, runs would be at a premium today. Morgan State finally broke through first in the third inning, when the hot hitting Victoria Fletcher singled through the left side to score Mia Ewell for the 1-0 lead.

Fletcher, who would go 2-for-3 with a RBI in the game, concluded the weekend series 7-for-9 with 8RBIs.
The Lady Bears upped their lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning when Gianna Ettore singled to score Alison Keener for what would be just enough insurance on this day.

Delaware State got on the board for the first time this weekend when Julianna Cerron reached on a throwing error in the sixth inning, which allowed Destiny Beckham to score for the 2-1 score.

Morgan's Anaya Hunte improved to 12-5 with the win, while Madelyn Edwards of Delaware State fell to 0-3 on the season. Hunte finished with seven strikeouts in the win.

Morgan State will travel to Lawrenceville, N.J. on Tuesday, April 11 to face Rider in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at Herb & Joan Young Field. Both contests will air live on ESPN+.

The Broncs (6-22, 0-4 MAAC) have dropped their last nine contests, including a doubleheader defeat (11-10 and 3-1) at Seton Hall on Wednesday.
